America's past pastime come on man. Look at the facts Super sunday is a unofficial holiday baseball is boring to alot of people-I like baseball don't get me wrong but to even start to argue that baseball is more popular than football is pointless because the torch was passed officially during the last baseball strike. Jerseys, ratings, advertisements, ticket sales-they all say the same thing football baby!

Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,
I don't care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game.

I suppose this is a matter of opinon-however i entered 'National Pastime' on Google search and in the first 2 pages there were 12 baseball references and no football! An article in the New York Daily News by 1 of the countries top sportswriters that i read b4 also states the national pastime as baseball!Yes Super Bowl is the greatest 1-day event-but it is more a spectacle these days.Just listen or read about it when its coming up and u hear'Beer-food-parties-halftime show-commercials-and o yeh,a game also'lol. As far as ratings go-well if u want to judge it on that-then i suppose WWE is the national pastime scince it does better then both!

You say so bro. you say football is a spectacle what about baseball? The government is actually threatening to step in and handle the drug policies because of all the steroids floating around baseball parks in America. Conseco is running around badmouthing some of the biggest names in the game and labeling them as roidheads. Mark McGwire is one of the two men credited with bringing baseball back into good graces with the fans after the strike, the home run race ran through America like LIGHTNING BOLTS and now the guy that won that race is being publicly called a juicer-that's what I would call a spectacle.

Randy Moss and TO run off at their mouths and act like jackasses but no one has ever labeled them steroid users. Baseball is leaving a bad taste in people's mouths again, I like baseball but I just think that football is a more popular sport right now that's all.

WWE is like pop music-teeny boppers decide those two markets success, I could care less about them.

Randy Moss?the guy who tried to run over a meter maid?and dragged her around on the ground? The guy who said sometine he dont care unless its a big game?
T.O?-The guy who said in an interview "everything T.O. does is front page news"
And for awhile there people were calling the NFL the National Felon League!

You guys could argue back and forth over the national past time forever. But there are some facts you have overlooked:
1. America's Past Time have been synonmus with Baseball since the 1940's. Times change.

2. Baseball has grown to international prominence. Can it truely be "America's game" if it is so popular outside the US? Maybe, but:

3. America used to dominate the Olympics in baseball, but now things are different. In 1996, the US team failed to medal, and in 2004 didn't even qualify for the Olympics.

Baseball has the greatest rivalry in sports-Yankees-Red Sox.
And the best movie-Field of Dreams. To paraphrase:

"They will come Ray-theyll hand over their money cause its money they have-but peace they seek.Throughout the turmoil of life there has been 1 constant-baseball!"

Sniff-kinda brings a tear to your eye, dont it.

Yanks and Red Sox is a matter of opinion. Frankly, I could care less about the yanks and the reds. Rivalries are better on the college level anyway. Bottom line, baseball is no longer uniquely American. Everything you are saying is just side stepping the issue. While football is American. Even in Canada where they do play football, it's different rules.

im not one for baseball but NFL is pretty entertaining ive managed to catch the superbowl for the last few years anyway. kills me getting to work the next day but we dont get it till late at night/early morning taped it this year though so i side stepped that land mine but its not the same to watching it live....

I love the tackles in NFL if it was a more fluid game with less stops then i think it would take off in other countrys better.

People watch it & if they dont understand it all they will see is alot of talking, then stopping at a down then the defence will replace the attack or visa versa then a time out & that really confusses them so they just dismise it as rubbish wen in fact its a clever game.

I like football-its my 2nd favorite sport to baseball.Im just sayin its not the national pastime.
OK its true kids are more into football and basketball. Some of it has to do with the late night games-especially in the playoffs-where many dont end till after midnight.Plus-the NBA for instance-going the M-TV route with High Flyin Action set to hip-hop music.
Ok-the US hasnt done well in little league competition-but hey-its just a bunch of kids after all.No matter where they play it,and where its caught on across the world-its still as American as hot dogs and apple pie-a great tradition and the national pastime.Wasnt it George Will who said "whoever wants to understand the pulse of America, must first understand baseball"

Hhhhmmm-this is the discussion forum isnt it?In a discussion dont u try and back up statements with opinons and facts?I am not 'obsessed'with this-the quote i used was from an article I read in the paper-and thought would be relavent to this thread.
I invite anyone to debate this using any rescource they would like-as i would in any discussion/debate.Surprised u would say that Shark, after all your posts debating the college football champs.I always took your opinons-facts-hypothesis-as your simply presenting your case.

I don't really think that quote lends any support to your statement though. I mean some hockey player calls it the national pasttime, it really doesn't convey any true sense of what you are saying. I just think it's really bad evidence for anything. It's a cliche phrase that has been around since the depression. See, to me, to be a true NATIONAL pasttime, you have to show me that A. it is unique to America and/or B. a large part of american culture. It may have been true a few years ago, bbut I don't think it is true now.

axisoftime
02-19-2005, 08:31 PM
Those are 2 very good points.I see more of what u are saying now. While it is not unique to america-it is uniquely american-no matter where its played. And as to 'a large part of american culture'-i guess that would be a matter of opinon. Some people care nothing about sports-some care nothing about government and its a large part of america.I thought the hockey player quote was relavent because 1)this is a professional sports player 2)a 15-yr veteran whos been around and his opinon is baseball is the national pastime.

No lie, I am a baseball junkie. I was the little kid that played t-ball and did little league. I tried football in jr. high, but I didn't like it as much. Once I hit high school I destroyed my knee. A short-stop all my life, then one day, BAM, I miss the catch and the ball obliterates my knee.

I watch it all I can. I've been a Red Sox fan since I was a kid. Over Christmas break, I drove down to Tampa, FL to greet the Sox getting off the plane for training. It was awesome. I can't get enough baseball. I'm a stats junkie and I can name just about any player you want to know about.

I cannot wait until pre-season games make it back on tv. Baseball is truly my game. Granted, Saturdays in fall are devoted to college football for me, it could never compare to the greatest game in history.

By the way, I DESPISE basketball. No offense to anyone who likes it, though. I just can't get into it.

Abbott: Alright, now whaddya want?

Costello: Now look, I'm the head of the sports department. I gotta know the baseball players' names.
Do you know the guys' names?

Abbott: Oh sure.

Costello: So you go ahead and tell me some of their names.

Abbott: Well, I'll introduce you to the boys. You know sometimes nowadays they give ballplayers peculiar names.

Costello: You mean funny names.

Abbott: Nicknames, pet names, like Dizzy Dean -

Costello: His brother Daffy -

Abbott: Daffy Dean -

Costello: And their cousin!

Abbott: Who's that?

Costello: Goofy!

Abbott: Goofy, huh? Now let's see. We have on the bags - we have Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know's on third.

Costello: That's what I wanna find out.

Abbott: I say Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know's on third -

Costello: You know the fellows' names?

Abbott: Certainly!

Costello: Well then who's on first?

Abbott: Yes!

Costello: I mean the fellow's name!

Abbott: Who!

Costello: The guy on first!

Abbott: Who!

Costello: The first baseman!

Abbott: Who!

Costello: The guy playing first!

Abbott: Who is on first!

Costello: Now whaddya askin' me for?

Abbott: I'm telling you Who is on first.

Costello: Well, I'm asking YOU who's on first!

Abbott: That's the man's name.

Costello: That's who's name?

Abbott: Yes.

Costello: Well go ahead and tell me.

Abbott: Who.

Costello: The guy on first.

Abbott: Who!

Costello: The first baseman.

Abbott: Who is on first!

Costello: Have you got a contract with the first baseman?

Abbott: Absolutely.

Costello: Who signs the contract?

Abbott: Well, naturally!

Costello: When you pay off the first baseman every month, who gets the money?

Abbott: Every dollar. Why not? The man's entitled to it.

Costello: Who is?

Abbott: Yes. Sometimes his wife comes down and collects it.

Costello: Who's wife?

Abbott: Yes.

Costello: All I'm tryin' to find out is what's the guy's name on first base.

Abbott: Oh, no - wait a minute, don't switch 'em around. What is on second base.

Costello: I'm not askin' you who's on second.

Abbott: Who is on first.

Costello: I don't know.

Abbott: He's on third - now we're not talkin' 'bout him.

Costello: Now, how did I get on third base?

Abbott: You mentioned his name!

Costello: If I mentioned the third baseman's name, who did I say is playing third?

Abbott: No - Who's playing first.

Costello: Never mind first - I wanna know what's the guy's name on third.

Abbott: No - What's on second.

Costello: I'm not askin' you who's on second.

Abbott: Who's on first.

Costello: I don't know.

Abbott: He's on third.

Costello: Aaah! Would you please stay on third base and don't go off it?

Abbott: What was it you wanted?

Costello: Now who's playin' third base?

Abbott: Now why do you insist on putting Who on third base?

Costello: Why? Who am I putting over there?

Abbott: Yes. But we don't want him there.

Costello: What's the guy's name on third base?

Abbott: What belongs on second.

Costello: I'm not askin' you who's on second.

Abbott: Who's on first.

Costello: I don't know.

Abbott & Costello: THIRD BASE!

Costello: You got an outfield?

Abbott: Oh yes!

Costello: The left fielder's name?

Abbott: Why.

Costello: I don't know, I just thought I'd ask you.

Abbott: Well, I just thought I'd tell you.

Costello: Alright, then tell me who's playin' left field.

Abbott: Who is playing fir-

Costello: STAY OUTTA THE INFIELD! I wanna know what's the left fielder's name.

Abbott: What's on second.

Costello: I'm not askin' you who's on second.

Abbott: Who's on first.

Costello: I don't know.

Abbott & Costello: THIRD BASE!

Costello: The left fielder's name?

Abbott: Why.

Costello: Because!

Abbott: Oh, he's center field.

Costello: Look, you gotta pitcher on this team?

Abbott: Now wouldn't this be a fine team without a pitcher.

Costello: The pitcher's name.

Abbott: Tomorrow.

Costello: You don't wanna tell me today?

Abbott: I'm tellin' you now.

Costello: Then go ahead.

Abbott: Tomorrow.

Costello: What time?

Abbott: What time what?

Costello: What time tomorrow are you going to tell me who's pitching?

Abbott: Now listen. Who is not pitching. Who is on fir-

Costello: I'll break your arm if you say Who's on first. I wanna know what's the pitcher's name.

Abbott: What's on second.

Costello: I don't know.

Abbott & Costello: THIRD BASE!

Costello: You got a catcher?

Abbott: Oh, absolutely.

Costello: The catcher's name.

Abbott: Today.

Costello: Today. And Tomorrow's pitching.

Abbott: Now you've got it.

Costello: All we've got is a couple of days on the team.

Abbott: Well, I can't help that.

Costello: Well, I'm a catcher too.

Abbott: I know that.

Costello: Now suppose that I'm catching, Tomorrow's pitching on my team and their heavy hitter gets up.

Abbott: Yes.

Costello: Tomorrow throws the ball. The batter bunts the ball. When he bunts the ball, me being a good catcher, I wanna throw the guy
out at first base. So I pick up the ball and throw it to who?

Abbott: Now that's the first thing you've said right.

Costello: I don't even know what I'm talkin' about!

Abbott: Well, that's all you have to do.

Costello: Is to throw the ball to first base.

Abbott: Yes.

Costello: Now who's got it?

Abbott: Naturally!

Costello: If I throw the ball to first base, somebody's gotta catch it. Now who caught it?

Abbott: Naturally!

Costello: Who caught it?

Abbott: Naturally.

Costello: Who?

Abbott: Naturally!

Costello: Naturally.

Abbott: Yes.

Costello: So I pick up the ball and I throw it to Naturally.

Abbott: NO, NO, NO! You throw the ball to first base and Who gets it?

Costello: Naturally.

Abbott: That's right. There we go.

Costello: So I pick up the ball and I throw it to Naturally.

Abbott: You don't!

Costello: I throw it to who?

Abbott: Naturally.

Costello: THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING!

Abbott: You're not saying it that way.

Costello: I said I throw the ball to Naturally.

Abbott: You don't - you throw the ball to Who?

Costello: Naturally!

Abbott: Well, say that!

Costello: THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING! I throw the ball to who?

Abbott: Naturally.

Costello: Ask me.

Abbott: You throw the ball to Who?

Costello: Naturally.

Abbott: That's it.

Costello: SAME AS YOU!! I throw the ball to first base and who gets it?

Abbott: Naturally!

Costello: Who has it?

Abbott: Naturally!

Costello: HE BETTER HAVE IT! I throw the ball to first base. Whoever it is grabs the ball, so the guy runs to second. Who picks up the ball and throws it to What, What throws it to I Don't Know, I Don't Know throws it back to Tomorrow - triple play.

Abbott: Yes.

Costello: Another guy gets up - it's a long fly ball to Because. Why? I don't know. He's on third and I don't give a darn!

Abbott: What was that?

Costello: I said I don't give a darn!

Abbott: Oh, that's our shortstop.

Okay, I am a huge baseball fan. I've been thinking about making a baseball thread for a while now.

So, as the title says, this is a thread about everything baseball. Who is your favorite team? Favorite player? Who do you think will win the World Series? Talk about today's games.
And I'm always up for discussion about the New York Yankees. Or any other team. But especially the Yanks :D

P.S. Mods- Sorry if I shouldn't have posted this here. I thought it was the only logical place to post.

Big time Yankees fan.

Not happy about our recent string of injuries. This season has been one of ups and downs already, but it was starting to look up overall. Now, I wasn't one of those people who thought we were gonna win the World Series this season after we went and won all of those games against Oakland and Seattle. I knew those teams were joke teams (Oakland has since started playing better) and knew better than to think we would perform like that against the rest of the league. However, with our recent run, I've felt like we had regained some of the swagger we'd lost. Giambi has been playing out of his mind, Mariano Rivera has been lights out, and the team has sorta accepted where Randy Johnson is at to the point where they know they can still win when he's on the mound but it's just gonna take more than 2 runs to do it.

Now, here we are, we get some nice wins before the break, including ones where we had to come from behind... something we hadn't been doing at all earlier in the year. I felt really good about them. What goes and happens, though, of course? Injuries. Kevin Brown, looked like he was accepting his role, and gets hurt. Wright looks to be out for the year. Pavano, even though he hasn't performed well AT ALL, is still a key component to our staff and doesn't help us when he isn't playing. To top it all off, Wang, who had been pitching pretty nicely I thought, is also now hurt. So, what's happened? Our fifth starter position has an ERA of over 11.

We picked a bad time to get hurt.

On a side note... it looks like Raffy just got 3,000. The man can flat out hit and that's all there is to it. Good for him and good for ******.

Last night's game against Boston was embarrassing !!!

I heard that best case with Wright he's back by the middle of August. But that's probably unlikely. All I know is that we need some good pitching, because Mike Messina and Johnson can't do it alone.

The WS win not win the World Series again!!! The Yankees will win it because we've got it ALL this year. We actually have starting pitchers(which we didn't have last year). We have 7 men to fill a 5 pitcher rotation. We have a new centerfielder, and we have a few options for DH. Our infield is great again this year. Baring injuries, this should be an excellent year.

* is so excited* Hope you don't mind hyper Yankee Fans!!! =)

It'll be a very interesting MLB season with ARoid caught using roids, Tejada Caught and oh Bonds soon trial out of the way the "steroid era" is at its end. With that happening we'll at least see a bit more pure athletic baseball going on, if you guys notice last season HR numbers has been down it probably will keep going down and stableize. As much as I like seeing ball going out of the cove at AT&T park specially when Bonds was there I really appreciate it more when I know the game is being played evenly. I'm a Giants fan and last few season has been bad and hopefully this would be a better season since we have a really good rotation with CYoung winner Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Barry Zito, Randy Johnson and whoever fills the fifth spot (Sanchez or Lowry)....now if the Giants can just sign Manny Ramirez maybe the scoring would improve lol. Go Giants!

Oh before I forget Commissioner Bud Selig should be fired or step down as commish this whole steroid era happened on his watch he sux!

One thing they should really impliment in MLB is Sallary Cap. One reason why some people don't like the Yankees is because they're just buying their way into winning which I don't blame them they have the money they can do whatever they want. That's why it would be nice for MLB to impliment sallary cap at least there would be a bit of balance with all 30 teams. Look at NFL and NBA as much as some team dominates i.e. Patriots in nfl and Lakers? in nba by the end of the season we usually get a diffrent champion.

...WOootT thank you for the sticky!

What get's me p.o.'d is the Yankees spending the money they do and then they don't make the playoffs, like last season. Granted, there were a lot of injuries and such, but come on, they spend that money and no results? I'm a huge fan but I'm not blinded by that.

GO BRAVES! Seems they're not signing Ken Griffey Jr. not that they really needed to. Who needs a aging center fielder anyways? I don't hate the guy, but really...he's due for an quad, hamstring, groin, shoulder etc.. injury. Also it'll be interesting to see if Dereck Lowe can resurrect his Boston magic and have a stellar season...though I have my doubts.

Well the problem with the Braves is the lack of Fan support so Mr Turner isn't making that much mula, it's actually amazing how a franchise like the Braves who have won their division every year in exception of maybe past two years has a very very very poor fan base. I'm a huge Braves fan and I actually thought it was funny that so many Cubs fans were there. I was used to seeing empty sections during playoff games so I knew the Cubs fans wouldn't have any trouble getting seats to the game..I remember seeing a sign during the '03 playoff games that said "Wrigley South" and a sign in left field that was in the shape of a steet sign and it said "Waveland AVE."

Even though the Blue Jays were considered as 'Canada's team' (especially after the Expos left a few years later), I was rooting for the Braves during the 90s, ever since Game 7 of the 1991 NLCS-which was an exciting game. This was before the Braves lost to the Twins. It was heart breaking to see the Braves come so close over the years, and only win world championship. I did root for the Blue Jays in the 1993 World Series, only because the Phillies had beat out the Braves in the NLCS. For some reason I have never liked the Phillies lol.

Even though part of me is stil partial to the Braves, I am bigger Cubs fan now (I know how to pick them don't I? lol). I have been a fan since early in the regular season, 2003. Although I have teams that I root for in almost every division now, but Cubs still beat them all out for me. Since I lived in Toronto for a few years, Blue Jays are my main AL East team now lol Because I love Chicago and think they are good team, I root for the White Sox too, but not nearly as much as the Cubs.

I am also a Cubs fan(since '94) and a Cardinals fan(since '96). I've been a Braves fan since 1991. I started watching baseball more often during the '91 playoffs so I saw that awesome Braves/Twins World Series:) Back in 2003 I actually believed for a split second that the Cubs were going to the World Series then reality struck and their 3-0 lead in game 6 disapperared in a span of 3 pitches:( I think I was the only one picking the Cardinals to win the 2006 W.S. Everybody else was all over the Tigers in the W.S. and the Mets in the NLCS. I want a poster of Beltran just standing there looking at strike 3 to end game 7 of the '06 NLCS. Beltran caused me so much pain when he was with the Astros so I loved seeing him basically choke in game 7:)

I can see the Marlins winning another championship in the next few years. They have some great, young talent. Plus, isn't that what always happens? The Marlins build their team up to a point where they can win, like in 1997 and 2003, then they get rid of all of the players and start again.

CompanyMan
04-16-2009, 04:37 PM
I think the Marlins found out that it is just too expensive to purchase a WS championship. I certainly like it better when teams use the farm system to build up their teams. Of course, living in a Triple-A town, it could be that I'm more partial to that system than signing free agents to win championships.

Sheffield just hit his 500th homerun against the Brewers. It's just so weird, as a Yankees fan, to see him getting a standing ovation from Mets fans. It should make for an interesting Subway Series this season. He's going to get torn apart when he comes to Yankee Stadium.

Awesome! Go Sox!

Went to Cooperstown today with a friend of mine. We were in line to get tickets for the old-timers game coming up in June. Mike Pagliarulo was there handing out donuts. All any of us had were some papers handed out by the Hall of Fame staff so several of us got his autograph on the back of one of the papers. He's a nice guy, he chatted with just about everyone there.

And contrats to Sheff on getting HR number 500!

Watch it. But I have to admit, when the Yankees have lost this season, they really have been destroyed. I don't mind a loss, but getting creamed is ridiculous, especially at your new ballpark. They need to send Wang down to the minors because something is wrong with him. I just don't see the point in sending him out there every five days and burning up the bullpen because he can't get out of the 2nd inning. Also, Joba needs to go to the pen because he's pretty damn bad as a starter. He's lost his swagger. If he's not going to be Roy Halladay, I want him in the pen because it will shorten the game.

Oh, come on! That was the funniest part. After beating my Dodgers in the NLDS that year, the Roidbirds being swept by the Red Sox that year was THE highlight of an otherwise disappointing season. But, yeah, the Yanks blowing at 3-0 series lead to the Sox was a very, very close second.:D:lol:

Sabathia pitches on Tuesday, I believe. He needs to improve as well because in his last start, he threw 120 pitches in 5+ innings. Hopefully Burnett will be able to restore order tomorrow. He's done it twice so far this season following bad Wang starts.

But you love the Braves now? That's not right. What did the Cards ever do wrong for you to turn to the Braves? The Braves need to play the Mets. I've been watching the Braves since 1991 but didn't start really getting into baseball until late in 1992. I went to a few Cardinals games a few years later so I started liking them and the Cubs were on WGN all the time so I started liking them also. Wow, so you like the Braves, Cubs and Cardinals. That is strange. As for the Cubs, I have this theory that the only way that they are going to break the curse is to beat the Yankees in the World Series. The Red Sox had to go through the Yankees and I feel that the Cubs will have to as well. So if we ever get a Cubs/Yankees World Series, I'll be very worried.

Yup. I definitely think that their bullpen is improved this year with Putz setting up KROD. That was their main problem the last two seasons with all of those games that they blew. The starting pitching is a major question mark outside of Santana. You just don't know what you are going to get out of these guys and if they don't do the job, the bullpen is going to be overworked.

It was a terrible game. A ball that should've been caught in left field by Murphy wasn't and Carlos Beltran had a chance to score and stepped on Molina's foot instead of sliding into home or knocking Molina down at the plate. Also, Oliver Perez continued to demonstrate how inconsistent he is as a starting pitcher.

Well, they have a right to. The Yanks played a terrible series. I can understand them losing Friday night when Rivera blew the save because IMO, Girardi made a huge mistake going to Rivera for more than one inning. Rivera is great, but he's not immortal and he hasn't been good saving games where he has to pitch more than an inning in recent seasons. Saturday's game was horrendous where they blew the 6-0 lead. Last night, I just think that it was going to take a brilliant pitching performance by Pettitte to stop the 9 game winning streak for the Sox. It didn't happen.

I love having Extra Innings :D

It's a wonderful invention, isn't it!!:)

Wow, GO JOBA! 1-2-3, 1-2-3...

He was good today, but I still want him in the bullpen. That 9th inning was really scary, but that's because their bullpen is such a question mark right now. They need Bruney back desperately. I also heard today that AROD might be back next week.

Typical Mets game today..Walked in the winning run vs. the Phillies:lol: Perez didn't last long for them...My Braves lost to the Astros and the Cubs have won 2 in a row!!!

Perez will get sent down to the minors and get brought up again just in time to shut out the Yankees in the two series that the Mets/Yankees play. The Yankees, for whatever reason, can't touch him. I thought that he was going to beat the Phillies yesterday because he has great numbers against them as well, but it just goes to show you how messed up Perez is these days.

That NL central is a weird division. Outside of the Cardinals, everyone else is just sort of lumped together.
