I knew from the beginning of the episode, when Lionell was standing behind the screen door with the sun creating an ora around him that he was being portrayed as a good guy.
I was skeptical about the entire thing though. I thought he was conning Clark's mom. I thought he mailed the package to her, and then showed up. I thought he hired the person to pretend to black mail her, and then "showed up" again. It was way too fishy.
At the end when he was handing the money to that guy and watching the film of clark I was convinced that he was conning her.
"Your secret is safe with me, Kal-el." --yeah that blew my mind. I expected to hear "Martha".
I still think there's a chance he was conning her for the purpose of gaining her trust. He "came to the rescue" multiple times in this episode, and even tested his luck at the end by acting coy, as if their relationship would somehow harm her--expecting her reaction to be what it was. With that trust established, he paid the decoy blackmail guy off.
NOTHING else in the world could possibly get under Lex's skin, than Clark's family trusting Lionel, and Lionel being able to sub it in his face.
I think this is Lionel's round-a-bout way of having power over his son.
