Clark is in Metropolis and calling himself "Kal," still under the influence of Red Kryptonite. Lex is on a deserted island and tormented by a fellow castaway named Louis... unless he's imagining the whole thing. Finally, Lionel accuses Dr. Helen Bryce of being behind Lex's apparent doom. To bring Clark back, Jonathan Kent makes a deal with Jor-El to become Superbo and take Clark home.
This episode is continued from the first season finale.
This is one my faovirte episodes. I love Red K Clark. He was so badass. Plus the fight between him and Pa at the end was so cool.

By far one of the best Episodes Ever. Was a real good choice by production to go back and add the first 5 min to the show. Every thing before the bank was added a couple weeks before it aired
Really? I didn't know that. Great move.

What? So all the scenes in Metropilis was done a while ago, then they shot the smallville scenes a few weeks before it aired?

The first few scenes with him at the car place then atm and then club. The show was supposed to start with him at the bank but they added those scenes I was talking bout. The producer talks about it in the DVD

I got chill bumps when I watched this again on dvd after Reckoning. Watching that scene where Jonathan made the deal was almost heart wrenching knowing everything that would happen after that.

i think exile is one of the best smallville episodes ever! red k clark is always cool to see. the only thing that sucks about those episodes is that clarks life is always ruined when he is on red-k, and he hurts his parents fellings, etc. but other than that, red k episodes rock. by the way i was wondering if red k can eventually kill clark? because if he is around green k long enough it can kill him so does red k just make him so "wild" that it eventually kills him or what?

Exile is my top favorite season opener. A very strong, awesome, well done episode chock full of all kinds of great stuff. Clark on Redk is always fun and this is where we get to see JK's deal with Jor-El. Also loved Rutger Haurer as Morgan Edge. I also really liked the Lex on the island scenes too. Awesome, awesome episode.

Exile is one of my all time favorites. This episode just blew me away when I saw it. Everything seemed to work from the music that was used, to the awesome cliffhanger ending. My only gripe were the island scenes with Lewis and Lex. While it is cool that they were showing Lex fighting his darkside, the scenes slowed down the pace of the episode. Also, what in the hell did they do to AM's hair? It was probably the only episode where I was not attracted to Chloe.
The bank robbery will always be one of my favorite scenes!
In regards to openers :
1) Arrival
2) Exile
3) Vortex
4) Pilot
5) Crusade
It is funny because I love all these episodes and Arrival, Exile, Vortex, and the Pilot are all on my top ten list. There are just certain things that make one better than the other for me. I love Crusade, but it did feel a bit rushed.

The cliffhanger was the best:
JONATHAN: Clark, you need to put all this behind you, son. Come on home to the people who love you.
Clark punches Jonathan. Jonathan gets up.
JONATHAN: Son, you're coming home with me. Now.
He then throws Clark threw the window. One of the best scenes cliffhangers in the show.

A great, if not amazing episode.
I remember I missed this when it first aired, and my first taster of season 3 was 'Phoenix'. It started with a 'previously on Smallville' and I was so gutted that I missed it! Seeing Lex on the island, Clark on red k, Martha and Jonathan's heartache etc......
But any way, I did finally watch it and was pleased with what I saw. My favourite opener, closely followed by 'Vortex'.

Just re-watched this on DVD tonight, and it does stand up to the test of time. There is an intensity in the acting that seems to lack in later seasons; Welling's Kal, in particular, has an energy and a "glow" about him that we rarely see from Clark. Heart-wrenching performances from Lana and Chloe as well. Just great stuff, one of the best episodes of the entire series.

yea true he could have and I thought that at first, but he would have to take pete wit him again to get the ring off.Or it could have been the kents discussion earlier about how after so long wit the ring on it'll be hard to get clark to do anythin he doesn't want.Pa Kent could have been scared cause he knew after 3 months this wasn't the same person,he even speaks on has he really raised a son to kill.So maybe that's why,but yea I thought that too when I first saw that

My favorite episodes are those that start out w/ Clark needing saving. I LOVE the opening for "Exile" and Clark spiralling so far away from himself that you really do wonder if it's possible to evict Kal El from his body.
First off - Kal El is exceptionally HOT. Not just that he's ripped beyond belief, but the hot clothes and teased out hair, the boy looks so far away from the farmboy that we all know and love that he's nearly unrecognizable.
Kal El is everything that, we would think, Clark is not. He's sarcastic, witty, arrogant, and fearless. I just love his comments on the scar on his chest "My father's a real bastard." In so many ways that one line really explains so much about his anguish.
What I love is that after this episode and "Phoenix" some of those Kal El characteristics do remain in Clark's personna. It's like he's acknowledged and embraced a part of his darker personality.
The phone booth scene has to be one of the greatest moments in Smallville. Not just because he's smoking hot either (although that certainly helps) but I love that they turned the whole phonebook lore aspect of SUPERMAN on end and instead of him changing into his suit he rips off his shirt and is burning in pain from his scar.
The guilt and love that is Clark Kent is breaking through Red's influence. The look on his face when he's holding the reciever w/ his mother is utterly heartbreaking. Inside that arrogant facade is a scared, lonely, and guilt ridden young boy.
I love Papa Kent in this episode, his take charge action and willingness to make a deal w/ Jor El shows the depths of his love for his son and makes him the true hero of these 2 episodes.
Best cliffhanger ever for an episode. I'm really glad I never watched these when they first premiered, I would've been pulling my hair out waiting between those 2 episodes.
I deff love "Exile"...one my all time favorite episodes :)
The whole epi was magnificent

What did I think of Exile?
I liked watching Exile for several reasons: 1) I liked the script and some of the clever quotes from Tom Welling and John Schneider, John Glover and Allyson Mack. 2) I like how Chloe & Lionel used the word "Exile," in a sentence; this was clever, because Exile is the title for this episode. 3) The Jonathan & Martha moments, and the Jonathan & Jor-El moments.
1) Favorite Clark lines:
When Morgan Edge said to Clark, "I'd like to talk about a job opportunity," Clark responded with, "Thanks, but I'm really not looking for work right now. I like to fly solo."
I also like this quote from Clark Kent:
Morgan Edge: Free tonight?
Clark: My calendar just opened up. (This was pretty clever).
I also liked the quotes from Lionel Luthor & Chloe, because they mention the word "Exile," and this is clever, because it's the title for this episode.
Lionel (to Chloe): Chloe, do you remember there used to be an octagonal keyhole here? It disappeared the same day as that inexplicable explosion on the Kent farm. The same day that our young friend Clark went into exile...
Chloe (to Clark): Clark, you were not forced into exile. You ran away from your problems. You are not being noble, you're being a coward!
2) Favorite Clark Kent moment: When Clark Kent picks up the phone from a telephone booth and hears his Mother try to talk him into coming home.
My other favorite moments are:
Martha Kent sobs as Jonathan Kent is hugging her. Jonathan Kent gives her a wonderful speech about having happy days again.
Martha: It's not fair. This farm has been in your family for 3 generations, 4 counting Clark.
Jonathan: It's sad. Since when have our lives been fair anyway, huh? You remember the day we found out we couldn't have children? You grabbed my hand and you told me not to worry. You said that we would have happy days again, and you were right. We have had happy days with Clark. But even though he's not here with us anymore, Martha Kent, I am here to tell you that we will have happy days again.
The Jonathan & Jor-El moments:
Jor-El: I am Jor-El, the true father of Kal-El.
Jonathan: His name is Clark Kent! I am his father and I raised him.
Jor-El: You have fulfilled your function in Kal-El's destiny.
Jonathan: His destiny is whatever he makes of it.
Jor-El: His destiny is too great for you to comprehend. This was Kal-El's first test to see if he was ready to begin his journey.
Jonathan: He's too young! He needs more time!
Jor-El: This phase of Kal-El's journey is almost complete. It will be of no consequence if he returns to you. . . for now.
Jonathan: You'll bring him home?
Jor-El: If you want him, you must retrieve him yourself.
Jonathan: I can't. He's too powerful.
Jor-El: Are you willing to sacrifice anything to get him back?
Jonathan: Yes! For my son I'll do anything.
3) Funniest moment in the episode: The part where Morgan Edge gives him an assignment to break into Lionel Luthor's office.
Morgan: Clark, I haven't told you where you're going yet.
Clark: LuthorCorp Plaza. You want me to break into Lionel Luthor's office.
Morgan: Will that be a problem?
I love the look on Clark's face when Morgan asks him this question. Clark Kent is so funny, sometimes.
Clark (smiling maliciously): No. It'll be my pleasure.
4) I only wish that Clark didn't push Lana or Chloe away. I wish he had a moment of talking to his Mom, Martha Kent on the phone, rather than have his parents worried sick about him.
5) What do I like best about Tom Welling's performance? I liked his sense of humor on Exile, and the fact that he can look happy, to getting angry as Kal-El, and being sad at listening to his parents talk about how much they miss him.
My favorite Season 3 episodes are:
EPISODES: Exile, Phoenix, Delete, Resurrection and Forsaken
1) Exile:
One of my favorite Clark Kent lines in Exile is this quote: Clark: Thanks. But I'm really not looking for work right now. I like to fly solo. (I think this is an ironic quote, since Clark Kent hasn't learned how to fly, yet).
Lionel: Trust me, it was right here. It disappeared the same day as that ... inexplicable explosion on the Kent farm. The same day that our young friend Clark went into exile. (That quote, too, is ironic, because Lionel Luthor mentions the title of this episode which is "Exile").
Then Chloe Sullivan mentions the word "Exile" to Clark Kent, which is clever, since Chloe always has a way with words and has some of the best Smallville lines: "Chloe: Clark, you were not forced into exile. You ran away from your problems. You are not being noble, you're being a coward!"
The best part of Exile is when Jonathan Kent sacrifices his body and heart to bring his son, Clark back home. So Jonathan Kent has a heart to heart talk with Jor-El:
Jonathan: He wasn't ready! But you, you had to keep pushing him anyway, didn't you? What kind of a race are you people? No wonder you destroyed yourselves. Aaah!
Jor-El: I am Jor-El, the true father of Kal-El.
Jonathan: His name is Clark Kent! I am his father, I raised him.
It will be of no consequence if he returns to you ...
Jonathan: Aaah! Aaah!

I really liked this episode. What I liked most was Clark on RedK, Chloe acting like Clark's friend again instead of the woman scorned, Morgan Edge, Jonathan with powers confronting RedK Clark and Clark in the phone booth. Also, Redk Clark's taste in things was really nice--clothes, the apartment, furnishings, etc.
That being said, Clark looked so gorgeous in this episode that I could hardly get past this DVD when I was watching the SV 3rd season DVD set. I never appreciated how gorgeous TW was until I saw him in this episode (I never really liked the light eyes), but he made me notice him here:D
Also, the bartender in the club scene's in this episode is gorgeous. Since the WB/CW like gorgeous people on their shows, SV should have used this bartender guy as a regular. He could have been Pete instead of SJIII since Pete on SV was black anyway. He could act just as good as most of the people on the show and he would have been gorgeous eye candy of a different ethnicity (of course KK is gorgeous and she is half-Indonesian, but they keep trying to pass her off as white. I mean look at her parents). SJIII was okay but he was no eye candy. :)

This is undoubtedly one of my TOP picks of awesome episodes within the stellar Season 3. I liked the chance to see Bad Clark at his finest. Kal really was a charmer, eh? LOL. Seeing Chloe already fidgeting to get out of her deal with Lionel, and the way she'd found out where Clark was but didn't tell Mr. Luthor really relieved me, as I thought the way she'd made her deal with him felt like such character assassination around the time "Exodus" aired. The beginning of the fight between Clark and the kryptonian-powered Jonathan was SWEET, and only got better in "Phoenix." Every character had their moment to shine, including Lana, Lex, Lionel, and Helen. Spectacular performances all around, and lots of heart-rending, funny, and super-exciting stuff. Plus, they incorporated the canon character of Morgan Edge into the Smallville mythos. How cool is that?

I'd give this episode a 20 if I could. This is my most watched episode of the series. All premieres should take note of the pace seen in this episode and how it's events continued into Phoenix. Definitely the best premiere of the series IMO and a great start to a spectacular season. Also a great continuation of Red.
I want a return to the storyline presented in Exile in season 9 by connecting Kal's actions with the RBB. I want Edge back in season 9 too. I think Season 9 should return to the mob/crime/power struggle dynamic seen in season 3 but replace Lionel with Intergang. I also want Edge to throw a party for the RBB (without Clark knowing he's behind it) & to spike the punch with liquid red-k.

Exactly, xray. Oh, and I forgot to mention, the music in this episode was stellar, too. The opening sequence as we zoomed down through the Metropolis street and into the night club was amazing, and so was the part where "Calling All Angels" was played when Clark snuck in to get a glimpse of his parents, sped away, Chloe and Lana had their conversation about Clark's whereabouts, and when confronting him, Lana hopped onto the back of his motorcycle. Oh... so... COOL.

I personally hated this episode. The whole feeling pity for himself to the point that he puts on a red K ring and runs away for 3 months and robs banks is a slap to the Superman mythos
SGuthrie27
06-09-2009, 11:34 PM
I guess I can understand how you feel, Supsfan, but I think the main reason I've been willing to accept that aspect of what happened with Clark at the end of Season 2 and beginning of Season 3 is that the whole point of this show is that it's an ongoing journey of learning and discovery for Clark. Undoubtedly he was going to (and still will) make mistakes, and he learned quite a bit from them, from what we've viewed since that point. It was definitely one of the darkest times in Smallville's version of Clark's history, but I think it was a necessary step for him to take, and helped the redemption of his character become that much sweeter later.

...and he learned quite a bit from them....
I guess you can argue he learned never to use a Red K ring again, but there is so many things from around the time of Exile to now that he seemed like he learned nothing from(including events to led to him putting on the ring that get him depressed).
I have to admit I am not a fan of the "angsty" and depressing storylines(ie wah wah wah my life sucks) on a whole on this show, Exile to me was to much in that vein for my liking. I would probably be more forgiving if Exile was the exception rather then the rule of Clark's behaviour of getting depressed and doing dumb things, but problem is it wasn't.
I thought Exodus was a great season ender as well, but Exile was a huge letdown in reguards to I wish the producers didn't make Clark take that route and it's hard enjoying both episodes at this point since I know the outcome is Clark does something stupid. I also hated the whole Johnathon gets Clark's powers and has heart problems from that point on to add to the list of other things Clark feels responsible for(ummmm ever heard of Green K, that was how I assumed Jonathon wouldfix it, but in typical Smallville fashion they had to make it a tragic thing) .
SGuthrie27
06-09-2009, 11:52 PM
Again, I understand and sympathize with the points you made, especially the one you mentioned about this being a repeated behavior pattern for Clark. At times, h definitely has been way more "angsty" than one would expect of the future Superman, even if it is during his teenage years (at least during this season it was).
Honestly, there was more I took issue with in "Exodus" than "Exile"...
1) The dissolution of Chloe's friendship with Clark and how he handled their friendship
2) Chloe's deal with Lionel (which again felt like major character assassination to me at the time
3) How Clark chose to handle Jor-El's threat without telling anyone else of his plans (if he had, it would've spared everyone (including himself) a lot of heartache)
4) Helen's speedy descent into a downright villain (even though we weren't 100% sure of that fact yet)
Still, I've ended up finding much to like in both episodes, and especially more so when I view them as part of a greater whole, observing Clark's progress throughout the entirety of the second and third seasons. He was definitely fallible and made plenty of blunders, but "Exile" is one scenario in which he had to suffer the consequences of his own actions, even if it may not have felt like suffering at first.
Thanks for the interesting and well thought-out debate, Supsfan. :D

I don't consider Exile part of the "wah wah my life sucks" category of episodes. I think Clark felt betrayed by both his biological father & his adoptive parents. Jonathan in Legacy even called himself the father that makes Clark run away. It was a bad situation because Clark was rightfully afraid of Jor-El would do to him based on the message in the ship in Rosetta. He was afraid that Jor-El would control him, especially after he branded him with that 8 symbol. So Clark didn't want to be taken away by his biological father (something the Kents would also not want) & decided to destroy the ship. At the same time, his adoptive parents rejected him after doing the only thing that was able to stop Jor-El from forcing him away. So Clark was in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. He exiled himself not having any intentions of coming back. He wanted to start living his life not holding himself back from using his powers. Clark felt alienated (no pun intended) and as a result decided to live his life like the alien he is and embrace his powers. The side of him that he had been repressing (the side that wants to live the alien life) crept out and took over.
