View Full Version : Ahh! The joys of product placement

Ok, this is too much.
Last episode we saw all of this "balance of nature" whatnot in Reckoning, which was quickly followed by an advertisement for Final Destination III (similar themes). Now, we see a female version of Superman and her drastic transformation simply by removing her glasses, being partnered with a commercial for contacts! When will the product placement end!
By the way, it's my first post here, yay!

I have to feel that the product placement in this episode was far worse than "Old Spice presents: Jinx" The woman pulled the box out of her bag, the camera panned down as she placed the box for a perfect 2 second shot of Acuvue contact lenses!! Then they had poor AM pimp the product... "Acuvue to the rescue!!" Wow, at least she made a funny face as she said it, but that was so blatant that it was hilarious!!

If it is a way to make money so Smallville stays on the air then I am all for it. I can put up with a couple minutes of cheap plugs as long as the rest of the script is quality like tonight's was.

I hate the cheap plugs. It isn't something that should be on Smallville. The Ford Fusion and Acuvue product placements are ignorant.

You realise that to use a contacts box, that did not read smallville brand x, might have even cost the show money?
I doubt that the 100th eppy was written just for the final destination tie in also.
Blatent product placement is grating, I agree, however, I honestly did not pick up on the acuview box as one. I think mild product placement just makes the world of Smallville more real, as opposed to seeing Smallville Pharmacy Brand Contacts on the box, which would have been cheesy.

Chloe even gave their catchphrase!!!!!!

It been in feature movies and other TV shows for years now. How many times have you seen a someone drinking a soda and the can's name is turn so you see what kind of soda they are drinking, a bottle of shampoo in the shower is turned to see the product name, a food products brand names turned so we can see them or I can go on and on. If it helps keeps our shows on TV and doesn't really hurt the storyline. I thought the contact lens line by Chloe was funny.

Are u kidding me? The Superman franchise created the product placement field! Doesn't anybody remember the Cheerios box in 'Superman the Movie'? It's to the point where it's just another character in the mythos, so cheesy, it's funny and the Superman movies/tv, whatever, wouldn't be the same without them! It makes me laugh everytime!

I didn't know acuvue had a catch phrase, what is it?
Who can forget the tossing of zod in superman 2 the movie into the big ass pepsi sign!!!! Now that is blatent! Contacts are mild compared to that...

TV is about making money, not catering to us fans.
So if product placement is what`s needed to sustain the entertainment, than who are we to fuzz about it?
The higher revenue the show creates, the less chance of being canned... (Firefly, John Doe, Tru Calling..).
Remember that shows with sf or supernatural elements like smallville appeal to a smaller audience than "lifelike-drama" like The OC, One Three Hil and about 25 police and lawyer dramaseries`..
NOw if they would only start selling smallville on iTunes, they would probably geat a big boost in revenues, thus securing the show for atleast a 6th season..

What I can’t forget from Superman II is Zod’s death-leap from the top floor of the Daily Planet directly after delivering that classic line, “Come son of Jor-El! Kneel before Zod!” The way he crashes through the window and proceeds to drop like a brick directly off camera is classic.
Oh, and Supes tosses Zod through a huge Coke sign, not Pepsi. ;)

There is a difference between product PLACEMENT and product HAWKING!
All of the things in the Superman movies were product placement, they weren't hawking the product. They were just placing a sponsors logo where it would be visible, but not shoving it down anyones throat by saying 'Drink Coke!' But on Smallville they had Chloe and that chick totally hawking the product buy using the name of the product and Chloe was giving their 'Acuvue to the Rescuse' catchphrase. That is rediculous. We would have all noticed the contact box if nothing was mentioned. I believe right after that scene, or close to it, Chloe or that chick sat down at a computer and started doing something. I noticed that the computer said 'Dell' on it. Now that is product placement. It's just placing something for people to see. Product placement is intended to be more subliminal than anything. It's to do sponsors and such a favor. I have noticed this in other shows. I think Seth used to have a Rock Star video games poster on his wall on the OC. That is all harmless product placement. But when you start hawking the product like was done on Vengance, then that is where I have a problem.
And I think that Zod's best line in the movies was:
"The Planet Houston?"
I crack up everytime i hear that. And the guys reaction was great. He's thinking Zod is an idiot, and he's like, "NO! The planet Earth!"

yes... smallville has switched from product placement to hawking... though even the product placement used to be a bit too frequent for my tastes... this new style of product hawking (i like the usage of that - nice labeling sam) is out of control

Mr.Gough I presume....
it's not just that SF appeals to a smaller audience. it costs a ton more money to produce.
and you realize you named 3 shows that Fox cancelled. they are renowned for cancelling shows before a real following can catch on. i mean the list would take me a page to complete.
poor marketing is not the fault of the show and it doesn't matter how many products you shove down our throats if nobody knows the show is on and what it's about.
trying to start new shows right before the MLB playoffs start is another braindead idea (especially when my BoSox and the evil empire are involved, and the Cubs for that matter). that essentially killed firefly and john doe.
