One of the better episodes this Season. Not from the acting point of view with the exception of Annette O'toole, but the plot was very good.
Two things, though...
Clark always new about the spaceship, which proves he always believed Lana, not like Lex and secondly; could somebody please tell me what was Lois's role in this episode, besides showing us she had bought a new car?

Maybe her role in this episode was to develop tension between her and Lex.

The scene with her and Chloe in the Daily Planet office set her down the path to becoming a Daily PLanet reporter.

Pretty good episode.
I like the ominous soft touch at the end.

This show is so good. This episode was so dramatic and without a doubt this season is epic. I am truly impressed with the entire cast and think this is the best show (next to House MD) that I have seen in years.

Uh, yeah, I think we get that!!! I thought the story was really tight and the pacing reminded me a lot of earlier seasons which is a good thing....I was jarred by the Lois scenes b/c they were so silly compared to all the other great stuff that was happening...thankfully the fine loft scene helped offset the anvil scene with Lois and Chloe at the DP. I think that Erica Durance does the best anyone could with very weak material...

I thought it was cr@p. The fight between Clark and Braniac was a joke. The Phantom Zone looked like cr@p, Lana didn't even exist. Clark's acting was weak, the story was inane, far too much happened in 40 minutes, they wasted time with that horrible Superman joke of a movie trailer, etc.

I liked it on several levels.

I agree it was an awesome exellent episode. I couple of remarks by some seem to indicate that the acting was off. I totally disagree. The moment between Martha and Clark as she lay dying was heart wrenching and so beautiful. Clarks agony was clear in at least 3 places where he was trying so hard not to cry and to be there for his Mom. As a Mom my self, I saw her mothers purity and his pain, it was too much too bear! It was painfully beautiful.

I don't know what has happened to the Loved, Hated it threads that used to be here but I'm guessing this is where the reviews are going.

I have to say I'm on the fence about this one. No doubt in my mind it as an excellent episode, no doubt it was one of the better ones. I'm on the fence about my disappointments and the things that thrilled me.

I'm most disappointed because it looks right now that there was nothing else to the story arc of "Brainiac", who I'm not so sure was Brainiac in the first place even though that's the name TPTB are using. Homicidal Computer AI from Krypton, mentioned the word eradicate in one episode, I'm thinking it's the Eradicator more than Brainiac. But that's just me.

If there will be more to this "Brainiac" story arc, then I'm all for it, but I was expecting a lot more from it. Like more interaction between him and Lex and more of a battle between him and Clark.

The rest of the episode was great though. I really am thankful they finally put an obvious plug for Lois becoming a Daily Planet reporter. That's been a long time coming, all their little subtle innuendos just were not doing it for me. Not that I like to be spoon fed, but sometimes they are too subtle.

I really liked the last scene with Clark and his dad. I think that was a very memorable and touching scene, and who knows where it will lead. We all suspect that Jonathan will be the one to go, even though I would hate to see it because I love the character so much as well as John Schneider. But the Smallville writers seem to do a pretty good job delivering on original superman mythos without the excess clutter that floods modern spins on the story. (Which I'm glad to see they are doing a Superman comic book that is back to it's roots now) So it would seem Pa Kent might be the most likely to leave the show.

The ship disappearing really was an odd thing for me, it's like one of those things where when a supernatural being dies all the spells or powers go with it, and the character was a machine, not supernatural, so I'm not sure what that was about. Could be the ship was recalled in the event "Brainiac" ceased to function, but that effect still wasn't justified. It looked like it just went stealth or something.

I liked how Chloe got on Clark about being more careful, that's something I've been thinking forever. I mean he thinks he's being this ninja expert at hiding things about himself but the stories are showing he is just really careless about a lot of things. The cave and the key is just one thing out of numerous different things he's done.

I also enjoyed Lionel's presence. I'm of the opinion that Lionel isn't Lionel in there any more. It's been a few weeks of seeing him do odd things, and tonight just put the exclamation point on it. Not sure it's Jor-El or someone else, but definitely not Lionel. This will be interesting as time goes on.

I always love seeing the Fortress, and all the special effects. I think that tiny fight between Clark and "Brainiac" was awesome FX work, but still it wasn't much of a fight. I wish they would have explained why the crystals stabbed further out when he landed on them as well. Cool effect, but needs explaining; we are not reading the script guys, it's supposed to come across visually! Which a lot of little things on this show are like that. It's shot like it's a comic book but without the little blocks of text explaining things [not the dialogue bubbles, the text boxes]

I also have to comment on the Superman teaser. I thought it was good, but I was very disappointed. They used a lot of the material we saw in the fan made trailer, they didn't show us much of anything new that hasn't been in the Director's video journal, and they used Marlon Brando's Voice Over from the original movie(s?). The voice thing was the only aspect of the fan's trailer that was missing that would have made it cooler than anything ever. Where the fan trailer brought nostalgic tears to my eyes, the WB trailer just left me wanting and disappointed. (Now I know how some women feel about different men)

The bottom line is, I enjoyed this episode, it wasn't the best, but it was a very strong story propeller. I feel it shot things way ahead and moved things along for the break. I am hanging on to find out so much about the plot lines that they started or continued but did not tie up. Could be the ones they did tie up are not really tied up.

This is why I love Smallville.

Lois' role was to show us the dash compartment in the all new Ford Fusion !!!.

Sidenote.... how could someone take something as beautiful as the Mazda6 and make it as beastly as the Ford Fusion......

One thing I really love about this season (and this episode for that matter) is that you can always find a logical and cohesive explanation for what is going on. sure, sometimes it may seem like a plothole or confusing as hell, but eventually you hit the spot where it all fits together.

and, the fight was awesome

this episode was great. I liked everything but the fight scene. I thought it ended too fast.
