Oh, dear. I really have to get on the computer more often! I keep missing all of these fantastc (though quite sad) updates.

I'll admit, this latest update made me cry...but that's nothing new, because stories written as wonderfully as this usually do make me cry.

I hate scenarios like this, where one person in a relationship feels he/she doesn't deserve the other and pushes them away without an explanation. It always leads to both of them getting hurt! Lana should know by now that Clark will love her no matter what! Oh well...if the story was nice and happy all the time, it would be much too boring to read!

Clark blinked hard as his friend tried to pull him out by the shoulders, "Jimmy? What are you doing here? Wh..." His body went limp as he realized he wasn't in Europe at all... 'Another flashback... why does this keep happening? I have to do something about it.' Please... please get out of this nice man's cab." Clark glanced away from Jimmy's worried face, noticing the fumes that were begining to steam off of the red faced Cabby.

Clark slid out of the back seat and paid the man, "Jimmy my life is a walking Nightmare... (Jimmy stepped quickly onto the side walk eager to put some distance between himself and the cabby who still staring daggers at him) I am dying inside, I mean really dying. How can I feel so miserable for so long and still be able to breath?" Jimmy tried to pull him towards the large glass doors of the entrance to Luthorcorp Plaza, "I don't knoow but in my opinion you were almost dead meat back there! Come on lets go, if I am late... well I don't even want to think about what Mr. White would do!"

Clark looked at his friend, seeing the desperation in his eyes he shook off his own painful thoughts and strode toward the reception desk. "Mr. Kent? (The receptionist barely waited for his nod before stepping out from her desk) This way please." She led them into a waiting elevator, inserted her key and pressed the button for the top floor. As the doors closed she made sure Clark noticed her checking him out. When the floor jolted upwards Jimmy shook his head in wonderment, "A guy never has a chance with you around... She was licking her lips since the moment you walked in those doors! I could have been holding a pink basket full of Hundred dollar bills with her name on it and she still would not have realized I was there! I'm not that bad looking am I?" Clark raised an eyebrow at his friend, "A girl would be lucky to get to know you Jimmy, your a stand up guy." Jimmy straightened his shoulders and stuck out his chest, "Ya I knew that! But If it's all the same to you, since you never seem interested, maybe you could do the rest of the male species a favor and glue a large rubber wart to your lip or something." This finnally broke through Clarks mood, letting out a tremendous guffaw, he slapped his buddy on the shoulder, "Good one." Jimmy's face turned down in a slight frown, and he mumbled quietly, "I was serious." Clark nearly doubled over in laughter, "You are dilusioned my friend, I never see girls checking me out." Jimmy shook his head, 'Then you must be blind!'

Both men's faces turned up as a security camera buzzed around in the corner, it focus in on Clark briefly before moving on to Jimmy. The elevator came to a halt, opening up to a large man with a suspicious bulge under his Purple Armani Suit jacket. The man gave them a once over before grunting towards the looming double oak doors almost two stories high. Clark walked around the man and pushed his way into the next room. He had been here several times following a lead on one story or another, but the place never ceased to amaze him. His eyes took in every last detail from the stuffed skins of near exticnt animals to the even rarer portraits adorning the walls, the room would have made the nations finest museums and galleries look like a garage sale.

Clark turned when a stony voice spoke up from his left, the words slicing like they were carved out of glacier ice, "Mr. Luthor will be with us shortly, can I get you gentlemen a drink?" "Hello Mrs. Ving, No I'm fine... (Clark peeked at Jimmy who vigorously shook his head) Were fine, but Thank you." Her snake like figure revealed itself as she stood from the large plush Italian sofa, she made a bee-line for the bar and began to pour herself a glass of Glenfiddich. Jimmy elbowed Clark in the side, "Now there is a woman I wouldn't want checking me out," He gave a visable shiver as he watched her bony arms lift the scotch to her thin lips, "She frightens me," he whispered.

"I can ask her to leave if you prefer," Chuckled Lex from behind the men. Jimmy spun on his heels, "Mr. Luthor.. no.. I mean uh... sorry.." he stuttered out of the path of the young billionaire as Lex extended a hand to Clark. Clark shook it reluctantly, "Mr. Luthor," He mumbled quietly. Lex clasp a hand on Clarks shoulder, "Well then shall we get the photo shoot out of the way first? I have a feeling your little friend here would prefer to be spending his afternoon elsewhere." Clark glanced at Jimmy's pale face and tipped his reporter's hat back a little, "Ya, that's fine." He watched on as jimmy took several photos of Mr. Luthor. When they had wrapped things up Clark clapped Jimmy on the back, "I'll see ya back at the office." Jimmy nodded and fled out of the large doors.
Lex waved Clark over to his desk, offering him a cigar, "Come, have a seat." Clark shook his head as he removed his notepad from his briefcase, "No, thank you." Lex sat on the ornate cherry oak desk and bit lightly on his cigar then looked over to Clark again, "You are surely the most envied reporter in the nation today Mr. Kent." Clark nodded his head, "I suppose your right. If you don't mind me asking, why did you choose me for your exclusive?" Lex waved his cigar dismissivly in the air, "Consider it a gift from my new girlfriend." Clark's brow knit together as he tried to puzzle together what that meant. He waved off the thought and got down to business, "So Mr. Luthor, The property you were just granted for the Orphanage, It has been rumored that you have been trying for some time now to get it deeded to you. Was sponsoring this prestigous endeavor your way of getting the state to hand it over?"

Clark ferreted as much information out of the self proclaimed Aristocrat as possible, but Lex proved, as usual, to divulge only what he wanted to be revealed. Three hours later he found himself at his desk putting the finishing touches on his report.

Clark pushed his chair back and headed towards Perry's office. He raised an arm to knock on the door but Perry beat him to the punch. The door swung wide to reveal a haven for all things Elvis, "What are you doing standing around, come in, come in Kent." Clark sat heavily on the worn, yet amazingly comfortable, old leather couch. When Perry passed by he handed him his report. Not even glancing at it Perry tossed it on the center of his desk and sat down into his chair slowly, "Kent I'm sure it will be through the roof spectacular, I'll send it straight to the press, but first we need to have a little talk... (He stopped to loosen his already loose tie) Your moral around here has always been a concern to me, i have had several of your Coworkers voice concern over you mental stability, and as of late you have really been putting my blood pressure to the test... " Cutting off his boss, Clark sat forward letting his elbows bare his weight atop his knees, "I know sir, I am sorry... I was hoping to talk to you about that..." Grabbing a bobbing head Elvis from his desk Perry cut back in, "I want you to take a few days off... I have been working you hard, not that I don't pay you enough to compensate for it, but I understand the need for an occasional break." Clark nodded, "Thank you sir, I was going to ask you myself... I think I'm going to head home for a short time... I need to take care of some things there..."

Perry watched with growing concern as his star reporter's face clouded over with pain and dread, "Okay son, you do that, Just be home by saturday for the Govenor's ball, okay?" Clark nodded and headed for the door. He stopped just before exiting and turned back around, "Oh and sir... I didn't add this to my report... yet, but Luthor is up to something, I am conviced his involvment with the Orphange is a facade to hide some new sceme of his." Perry nodded thoughtfully, "Yes... yes good work Kent, I will have Lois... (remembering she no longer worked for the Planet, he changed thought mid course) We need more help around here... I'll get someone on it Kent. Take care of yourself now, and I'll see you day after tomorrow." Clark grabbed his classic reporter's hat, (it had been a gift from Lana when he landed his first reporting job in Spain. She had thought it a joke at first but it ended up looking so good on him that he wore it to work every day since) and pulled on his Coat before heading for the elevator. 'It's Thursday, I had better put in my order for my Penguin suit, then I'll get some sleep. Tommorrow I'll finnally go home... tomorrow...'

Yea!! We got an update!! And we are finally back in the present...but what has happend. Why didn't Lana ever come back to Clark? Because she thought he left her? And he still thinks she is dead? This is terrible!! Oh my goodness, their meeting will be very interesting.

Chapter 9 con't

Clark kicked off his shoes and fell into bed. He dreaded the memories he knew would haunt him in his sleep, but it was still better than the pain he endured every waking minute. His eyelids heavily sunk closed...

"Mom?" Martha gasped at the whisper of a torn voice coming through her phone, "Clark! Oh honey!! Oh!! Where are you? Are you okay? Honey please come home." Clark began sobbing into the phone, "I can't.. I can never go back to Smallville... It would kill me all over again." Martha desperate for her son spoke confusedly, "But Clark La.." "NO Please don't ever talk to me about her... Just please, It has taken me six years to take this step forward. And any mention of her, sends me reeling back." Martha nodded to herself, "Okay.. okay whatever you want... just please, Your father and I... can we see you?" There was a few seconds of silent static before he spoke up again, "Yes... will you come here? I... I need Superman's suit back..." Martha's tears began flowing freely, "Yes of course... where are you, we'll come right up." Martha scribbled down the address quickly, hoping she had understood him... his voice was so broken. "And Mom... please tell dad my only rule... I don't want to leave again, (Martha shivered at the coldness that entered his voice) but if I am reminded of her... I will die all over again..." Martha hung up the phone with a vow to never let anything come close to pushing her son away again...

*Ding- Dong*.... Clark pulled the door open slowly, his eyes blinking against the harsh noon sun now pouring into his apartment. "Son? Oh My God, Jonathan go open his curtains." Martha rushed in through the door, taking her son's face into her soft hands, "Son you look like you havn't eaten in weeks!" Clark's body began to heave in what would have been tears had there been any moisture available for the task, "It's been more like 6 years," he stated through his gasps for air. Martha nearly fainted, but the sudden flood of light as the curtains were pulled brought her back into focus, "Clark how... Come sit." She led him by the arm to the only seat in the apartment. She hurried into the kitchen only to return a moment later holding a box of baking soda, "Jonathan this is the only thing in the entire apartment!!! And I suspect that it came with the place." Jonathan shook his head sadly, "Son you.." Martha gave him a sharp look of warning, "Jonathan. would you please bring up the food we brought." He nodded, feeling the burn of her none-verbal chastisement, he knew she was just trying to keep him from breaking Clark's rule, as much as it bothered him, he knew she was right, 'Better to have him in our lives again then to risk scaring him away.'

Martha served up the Steak and potatoes with a large side of roasted veggies and Jonathan sat on the low window sill next to Clark, "Son... where have you been?" Clark settled in on his back with an arm draped over his eyes to block out the sun-light. He mumbled back in response, "I was in My Fortress Of Solitude... I didn't know what to do... I just found myself there, Jor-El took me in, I have been studying all the knowledge he left behind for me... He finnally told me it was time to embrace my future, and sent me here... What choice do I have but to focus on my abilities... If I don't ... Well there is a darkness waiting to swallow me, everytime I lose focus I can feel the abyss callling me. All I want to do is fill the void, but it is impossible... I'm already dead... My physical body just refuses to accept it... So I go on, trying to lessen the misery the only way I know how... helping other people... that takes so much focus, that it kid of allows me to seperate from my mind. It's almost like I have an alter ego and he takes over, allowing me a modicum of peace, a short time to hang in a place of nothingness." Jonathan, a deep sadness apparent in his eyes, looked his son over, "I'm just happy to see you again... we didn't know where you were... the stress nearly killed your mother..." Clark sat up slowly and glanced at Martha putting the final touches on their dinner plates, "I'm sorry... I'm back now... as much of me that is left at least." Clark's sunken eyes closed heavily as his shrunken frame settled back onto the ragged old couch he had found in the Alley... 'I guess I need a job,' He thought vaguely.

Clark moaned in his last throws of sleep. Finnally his eyes fluttered open to reveal himself lying on the soft blue carpet, 'Hmm must have fallen out of bed.' He scrubbed at his eyes as he recalled his dream. 'No that's not me anymore,' He thought as healthy skin met his finger tips, he gave a sigh and hefted his large frame off the floor. Walking slowly to his window, he pulled back the drapes and inhaled the crisp morning air. He let his ears search the vast city, 'Strange.. not a single distressed citizen in reach of my ears... well other than old Mrs. Casry on 23rd blvd. But that old bat yels at her poor husband every minute of every day, No nothing there for me to do... It seems fate will allow me a day off after all.' He pushed back the tremble in his belly, he had secretly hoped there would be some excuse, that would allow him a way out of going bacck home. He trudged through his morning routine slowly, half enjoying the chance to just be slow, the other half terrified of what lay six feet under in the Smallville cemetery.

Clark realized he hadn't ordered his Tux the day before, so after a morning full of preperations he grabbed his hat and took a slow walk through the crowded streets. After an hour or so he arrived at Trodelli's Tuxedo's. A thin man with slick black hair and a glowing smile floated over to Clark, his clucky little voice started up with obvious pleasure, "Ah! Mr. Kent!!! It has been a while! I was wondering if you had maybe gotten a new tailor?!" His eyebrow raised in questioning, until Clark laughed him off gently, "Of course not!" The fragile little man snapped his fingers flamboyantly, sending his employee's scurying in every direction. "Wine Mr. Kent?" asked a mildly pretty young lady garbed in what Clark thought must be the latest fashion. "He smiled distractedly as Trodelli podded him towards a changing room, "No thank you."

Clark finnally emerged from the shop just as the sun disapeared behind the tall buildings surrounding him. He climbed into the Cab one of Trodelli's workers had called for him, and settled in for the 3 hour ride home.

Clark peered around the queit farm. The last rays of sunlight glitted off old Betty, 'I wonder if that tractor is still working... Who am I kiidding! She'll probably be around when I am an old man!' He gave the rusty old thing a pat as he climbed the stairs to his home. He tapped hesitantly on the door, sending some peeling paint falling to the porch, *knock knock...knock* The curtain pulled back revealing his Father's weathered face. "Clark!!!!" He tore the door open in a hurry, unbelief plastered across his eyes, "Martha it's Clark!!!!"

Jonathan clutched his son in a trembling embrace, "Son, your home!" Martha came hurrying down the stairs as fast as her old legs could take her. She almost pushed her husband out of the way to get to Clark. She fell into his arms holding him desperatly, her thin voice trembled amidst her sobs, "Son I never thought you'd come back home! Oh come in come in!" Martha hurried him over to the couch, "Are you hungry? Is everything okay?" Johnathan led Martha gently to the recliner, "Martha just let him talk would you!"

Clark sighed heavily, "I'm sorry I have been so distant, I just well, I've been busy," He lied. In truth every thing about home brought memories flooding into his head. "I hope to come home more often to vist, but I need some closure first. I've come.. to.. to visit.. (His voice broke as swirls of memories flooded through the gate that he had held shut for seven years.) Lana," he ended just above a whisper.

Martha and jonathan shot eachother looks of shocked disbelief, 'What are the chances.' Clark looked at his hands, this was going to be hard, "After the... the accident... she was brought back here?" Not knowing how much he wanted to know his parents agreed silently to stick as close to Clarks rule as possible, 'No need to scare him away because we told him more then he wants to hear, no just answer his questions directly.' Martha spoke through her shock first, "Yes." Clark squeezed his eyes shut against the flow of tears that threatened to break his resolve, "Was she ahh... is she ... with her parents?" Martha's eyes shot back to Jonathan, 'how does he know!' "Yes, she is there." Clark's shoulders heaved upwards as he stealed himself, "Okay, okay... thank you... I ahh... I have to go... I'm sorry.. I'll be back... maybe in a few weeks..." Martha and Jonathan hugged him goodbye, but Clark was numb to the world, he didn't notice their tentative glances or hear their warm wishes of good luck. He stepped out onto the porch and was surrounded by the fresh farm smells of a Kansas evening. And so he began his slow walk to Smallville's Cemetery.

1st! Hey, Nessie, I was so excited that you were updating, so I saw Rick's Buffer, & I posted another, but by that time, you had posted - so I changed it - but still had to go read.... Anyway, that was great! Can't wait to find out what happens. Why would his parents say Lana was with her parents? Doesn't make sense. But I'll be patient. Just PLEASE don't make us wait long for the next update. We really LOVE this story. PPMS!!!

If only they would have shared their thoughts in the hospital instead of them thinking of what the other was thinking.....AHHHHHHH!!

(*1) Clark paused at the wrought iron fence, watching for a moment as it swung on it's hinges. The only sound in the night was the crunching of his boots as he dredged forward. Clark glanced at a gravesite to his left where a mouse tugged at a pile of dried flowers, noticing him, it scurried away under a nearby bush. He sighed into the growing wind, thinking that perhaps he should turn back after all, 'No come on Kent, Come on....' He froze midstep, as a familiar scent swept over his skin, taunting him, calling him forward. He walked with a purpose now, her fragrance leaving him just short of a trance. He came to a stop in front of the Familiar graves of Mr. and Mrs. Lang. His head swivled in confusion, 'Where is she?' He turned, thinking to go check the nearby plots. The hairs all accross his body suddenly stood on end as he came face to face with his greatest nightmare and greatest love.

Confusion etched itself over the young faces, neither seemed to breathe as they searched each others eyes. A silent wind swiveled around them sending the young girls flowing white skirts streaming through the air. Her raven hair, a stark contrast to her flowing white blouse, flowing across her gentle face was no barrier to the gentle eyes of her unexpected visitor. He delved into the depths of her soul with a gaze so penetrating it sent tremendous waves of comfort shooting through her entire being, 'a feeling I have missed and drempt about for so many years, and now he comes here, in the middle of the night... am I dreaming again?'

"Clark?!" Lana half reached for his face, before letting her arm freeze in mid air. Clark startled out of his unbelief at her movement, he watched as the white lace of blouse swayed in the breeze, "You, you look so, so real..." Lana sub-consiously touched the scar under her hairline, her voice was laced with sadness, "Not the first thing I dreamed of hearing from you." Clark shook his head in an attempt to shake her over whelming scent from his senses, 'How does a ghost have a smell? (he inwardly yelled at himself) Stop playing games with me! Stop trying to make her real!' Not sure how to proceed, he cleared his throat softly, "I am sorry I took so long to visit you... (he scrubbed a hand through his rough curls) I just, I guess I couldn't bring myself to face my demons, I'm sorry."

Lana stepped out of the shadows, where she had been hiding from the previously unknown visitor, into a ray of moonlight that was pouring from the branches of the overhead tree. She tried to push down the pain his words brought her. That he thought of her as someone he should avoid brought to her heart a fierce desire to break down and weep to her death. 'I won't waste this gift of his visit on my own tears,' she took a breath to steady her nerves, "I have been looking for you every where, I... we parted on such terrible circumstances..." Clark's eyes fell to the dusty path, "Ya we did, (he thought back to the look in her eyes that fateful night that he had showed her his abilities) I am sorry I... (tears began to leak from his eyes, but to him they went unnoticed) I feel responsible for taking away all your dreams. (He draped his large hands over his face and fell to his knees sending up a small dust cloud) I'm sorry Lana, I'm so sorry." All the built up pain of the last seven years poured out in tremendous sobs as he felt Lana's gentle arms surround him. Her tears blended with his as they touched cheeks, the fresh scent of wet dirt swam around them as their tears danced to the dry ground. "Clark my only dream was you, and when you left, It was more pain than I could endure, I felt my entire life slip between my fingers, I'm dead without you." Clark reveled in the softness of her skin, "Every where I turn you haunt me, I see you in the laughing eyes of a young couple, in every moon I see the brightness of your smile, You've never left me and yet I've never been more alone."

They desperatly held each other for an eternity wrapped in a few seconds before Lana pried away to look in his eyes, "I never told you... how amazing you are. Clark fidgeted uneasily under her gaze but her hands held him steady. "Clark your abilities... Why did you choose me? I mean... You could easily have any Woman in the world... Why me?" Clark shook his head in disbelief, 'Am I imagining all this?' He touched her soft hands gently, 'so warm.... how?' He stared at her hands for awhile in deep thought... "You were not afraid of me? I... I thought you sent me away because I was a freak... an Alien..." He looked up at her gasp. "I sent you away because I was ashamed of my appearance." She let her eyes fall from his abruptly, "I thought I would save you the trouble of breaking up with me." Clark frowned deeply, "You really thought I was that shallow? I have loved you my entire life! You I Love Lana. (He laid his palm over her chest) The way you made me smile at the smallest thought of you, the kindness you show to people, always putting your own needs on hold. I Love you for so many reasons... but mostly because in a world where I feel alone... You bring a home to my heart... You are home... you. Without you I feel so lost in this world, like I don't belong... like my only purpose is to save people who will turn around the next day and be back to their same problems... but you, you cared for me... I never was able to convince you that I was happy if I was really feeling forlorn, you always saw my sadness, and you didn't ignore it like the rest of this world. You embraced it, you took it away.. with you, there was no alone... I was simply home." Lana caressed the back of her hand over his red cheeks, "You came home to me Clark, I'm at peace now." Clark looked into her shining almond eyes, running a shaking palm over her glossy hair, "I understand... I'll leave you to rest then... I'll always Love you Angel Bear..." Clark stood in a swift motion and with one last glance into her confused eyes he supersped away into the dead night.

Clark checked his speed and lept from the dark Alley behind his apartment building up to his 11th floor balcony. He pushed his way into his apartment as he savored the evenings events, 'How real that felt.' His mind swam in the not so distant memory of her, the feel of her soft skin caressing his cheek. 'At peace now... She said she could rest in peace now....' He ran a hand through his hair as his subconscious berated him, 'Did you have to leave so soon?' ... 'Yes,' He thought back and headed for the shower. 'Yes, her ghost has been waiting all these years for rest, and now she deserves to get it.' He tried hard to convince himself that his abrupt departure was what was best for her. He climbed into the steaming shower, letting the hot water splash over his tense muscles. Sighing deeply, finnally feeling so much of his built up stress wash down the drain, he reasoned with himself further, 'besides I'll visit her often now, I don't have to hide from my guilt anymore.' Clark spent the rest of his evening in quiet contemplation, the urge to visit her again already pulling at his every thought, 'First the govenor's ball tommorrow, then I'll go back.... Will her spirit come again... or is she gone forever now?'

250 miles south of metroplolis, a bitter wind wrapped itself around a small figure, her confused tears splashing over the graves of her parents as she sobbed her lonley heart to sleep. (**)
