You can find it on this site, and it'll probably be posted sometime in the afternoon. Now, I'm wanting to know if this is the overnight rating or the final rating? I'm not sure if there's a huge difference between the two.

Any ratings posted today would be the overnights. The overnights only consider a portion of the ratings, those from the 50 or so biggest ratings markets. Using those markets as a sample, they estimate how many people in the entire country probably watched the episode. The final ratings are the actual ratings numbers for the whole country, and won't be available until next week.

The overnights and the finals are often different because, as I said, the overnights are, basically, a well-informed guess. But you never know if the difference will be lower or higher. For example, last season, "Recruit" and "Krypto" got the same overnight rating. But, in the finals, "Krypto's" ratings were actually a bit higher than "Recruits".

Still, the difference between the overnights and the actual ratings aren't usually that big. Although it can be.

This is from MediaWeek.com:

"Although CBS, as usual, remains the network to beat on Thursday, the story worth telling last night was on the WB, courtesy of the relocated Smallville. Veteran Smallville opened season five with an impressive 4.4/ 7 in the overnights (#4), 5.74 million viewers (#5) and a 2.6/ 7 among adults 18-49 (#4) at 8 p.m., beating the season-premiere of ABC’s relocated Alias by 8 percent in the demo (see below). Comparably, that was the best metered market rating for the WB in the Thursday 8 p.m. hour since the one-hour launch of sitcom Family Affair on Sept. 12, 2002. Versus two episodes (original and repeat) of former occupant Blue Collar TV on the year-ago evening (Overnights: #5, 3.0/ 4; Viewers: #6, 3.11 million; A18-49: #6, 1.3/ 4 on Sept. 30, 2004), that was an increase of a considerable 47 percent in the overnights, 2.63 million viewers and 100 percent among adults 18-49."

Looks good so far for Season 5.

Woo! The true test, though, will be NEXT week... Ya know, what happens AFTER the premiere. Because everybody looooooves season premieres and makes it a point not to miss them, but things sometimes peter out (no Pete pun intended... errrr... ok there was...).

Woot Smallville beat OC. I watched OC S1 but drifted out of S2. I thought OC was a big deal over in America? Anyway, can't believe SV couldn't beat Joey, I mean who the hell watches that crap? I think if SV is written well and directed wll it should be able to rival Alias but prob that is my wishful thinking.

Ummm actually I watch Joey ;) It's not surprising that SV couldn't beat Joey or Alias, cause those are on bigger networks

I think ratings are highly misleading. They show how SV did at 8pm, but I live in the Columbus, Oh market and the show doesn't come on until 11pm here. I think they would have a much larger viewer base if they were to show it at 8pm here.

It's pretty good that SV beat the OC considering the OC is on a network that everybody gets while only 80% of Americans can get the WB. I honestly thought that the OC would get better ratings, but I guess it isn't as popular as people always make it out to be.

actually the ratings posted above were over-night ratings;)

@cmqames: yes, the OC is a majorly advertised and loved by many over here, it's what's "In" but I don't put attention to that junk, apparantly many others don't either:\

and I think it's reasonable that SV couldn't beat Alias but I thought that it would beat Joey, quiet a surprise to me, but as said above by ~*Lois & Clark Fan*~ the network is bigger and the show isn't that bad.

Also, though, keep in mind the new season of "The O.C." premiered a few weeks ago... So I'm not surprised SV's season premiere beat the third or fourth episode of "The O.C.'s" new season. I, myself, will be watching "The O.C." at 7pmCST this fall and taping "Smallville" for later viewing.

Silly buns, I'm not a Nielsen family, so they have no clue what I'm watching and when. :) But I get what you're saying.

The reason I decided to do things this way is so I can watch "Smallville" at 8PM (right after it's over) with my dad (who loves the show) and be able to fast forward through commercials. I'm the only one who will be watching "The O.C."'s new season in my house (my dad watches it too, but I'm still getting him caught up on Season Two), so I'll watch that alone at 7PM-- without having to tape it or anything-- and suffer through commercials while taping "Smallville" and, most likely, playing computer games while I listen (I have a short attention span, heh).

how do you know if your part of the Nielsen family?

shirkie

You have a little box on your TV that sends information about what you're watching to the ratings company. You fill out surveys and stuff. I WISH I was a Nielsen family... I got so excited one time when the Nielsen foundation called our house, but they just wanted me to participate in a stupid survey about how often you go to the movies... And when I said "never," they were like "Thank you for your time!" <Click>. Bah.

So anyways, that's how those ratings thingies work... The Nielsen company tries to get a representative sample of TV viewers in America and outfits their TVs with little boxes that transmit viewing info to them, and that's how they know who's watching what when (whoa that's a lot of w's). I hope I have that right.... Maybe I'm wrong, anyone have a better explanation of how ratings work? I just kind of assumed that's how it worked. I STILL WANNA BE A NIELSEN FAMILY. :(

I dunno where the ratings are. "The O.C." isn't on for a few more weeks because of the Superbowl or whatever that baseball thingy is (joking, I know Superbowl is hockey, ha ha!... ok joking again...). ;) So I wouldn't expect a ratings dip for "Smallville" for another few weeks at least.

From the information I got The O.C. beat Smallville with The O.C. having 6.8-6.9 million viewers. Of course the people I have talked to say there were all different ratings that night so....Its kinda a guessing game.

shirkie
10-10-2005, 09:12 PM
Well, "The O.C." wasn't on last week (during "Mortal"), and it won't be on for a couple more weeks because of baseball. But I'm pretty sure "Smallville" beat "The O.C." when "Arrival" aired. Again, though, I point out that season premieres always have great ratings. The true test will be after "The O.C." comes back from the baseball-related hiatus. Then, both shows will be airing regular episodes. There might be an initial advantage to "The O.C." in its first episode after hiatus as some fans might excitedly flock to see the first episode post-baseball, but things should settle into some sort of reliable pattern of viewership after that.

Of course, I could be horribly wrong, and maybe neither show will get any viewers at all... Maybe everyone will just watch "Everybody Hates Chris..." :/
