They've used the white shirt only on rare occasions, usually to emphasize Clark's human qualities. After the whole Kal-El thing, he showed up in white, and I beleive the loft scene where he's greiving over Alicia, I think he wore white then as well. Usually it's the standard red or blue, he'll wear black when either Kal or Kal-El is dominant.

He also wore white in "Gone" when he was fixing the truck and in Shimmer (I think) when he was fixing Lana's sink pipe.
I guess it's for when he's in a "fixing up" mood.

I've come to think of white clothing as being a blank slate in terms of character (moral) position. His primaries and black are the extremes and white is the center, or the neutral point.

thats a good way to think of it, Braniac. i agree. theres no doubt that they use the colors that the characters wear as symbols.
when Clark fixed Lana's pipe tho he only wore white so when he got all wet, we could all see his sexy abs. woo!

You never ever see him wearing yellow though. The only time i have seen him in yellow is when hes wearing the Smallville High Jockey Jacket. But he might not look that good in yellow.
