I'm kind of wishing I was in the United Kingdom right about now... this week marks the 40th anniversary of the premiere of Doctor Who, the long running (1963-1989) BBC series.

I'm very excited about the forthcoming return of the show (whenever it may come to this side of the pond)... but I'm also excited by some of the things I am seeing! Has anyone seen this, for example?

Radio Times covers (http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho/images/rtall.jpg)

Wow. Nifty.

So if you're reading this, four questions:

Favorite Doctor? Favorite Companion?
Who should be the Doc in the new series, and should the show follow the previous continuity?

Actually, heck, I'll make Favorite Doctor a poll just to be a pain.... but post why here. :)

It was Tom Baker I first saw as the Doctor so he really set the standard for me! I actually like all of them to a degree! Don't really have a favorite companion... though the second Romana, Peri, Leela, and Tegan were hot! Hated Adric!!
I keep hearing that Rowen Atkinson was the producers dream choice for a Doctor Who movie and I think he would be a natural! Richard E. Grant doing the voice of the 9th Doctor (animated) is cool though!
As far as continuity... I am all for it! Shows should acknowledge what came before but I am not a continuity fanatic! If they fiddle with some things, I won't have a problem... the cool thing about playing with time and space is that almost anything is possible!

My favorite is the docter who's sidekick is Ace.

BTW, you may want to move your own thread to the TV forum. :)

Definitely Tom Baker, couldn't be anyone else. Anyone read his autobiography, it's a hoot. I saw him on a train one time, the guy opposite him was all antsy and eventually got up the nerve to say "Excuse me Mr Baker but I'm an enormous fan, can I ask you some questions?" to which Tom Baker replied "Off course you may." He was just so lovely and this was at about 10 past 8 in the morning. Very tall too.

BTW - that Dr Who weekend was thoroughly enjoyable - maybe your next poll should be for the next Dr. Who in 2005, I'd love it to be Eddie Izzard.

The new series is about to start on BBC. Is this a great new era or will it be a huge disappointment

Starring acclaimed actor Christpher Ecclestone and ex-pop starlet Billie Piper.

I don't know how soon we'll be able to see the new Dr. Who series here in the States, but I know I'm feeling pretty excited that the show has been revived. It will give a chance for younger generations who hadn't really been introduced to the series an opportunity to enjoy it.

And I do hope they spend more on it this time. The millenium TV movie with Eric Roberts was very good I thought but they managed spend some real cash on that one.

applecrash
03-20-2005, 07:17 PM
Yes, Eric Roberts did a great job as the Master. In fact, he made the character seem even more frightening than the previous actors had.

Paul McGann portrayed the Doctor's eighth incarnation quite wonderfully. I wish FOX had decided to take the series further so that we would get to see more of him. (I still have this movie on video tape and pull it out to watch it from time to time.) This movie renewed my faith in Dr. Who after the nearly unwatchable Sylvester McCoy years. I actually felt thrilled to see McCoy come back for the regeneration scene because I knew, as I watched him as the Doctor shot several times as he walked out of the TARDIS, I'd never have to see him in that role again.

I think Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper truly seem committed to make this series fly again. I hope the show attracts a large number of fans again and that the BBC will keep making it as long as it is interesting.

Since I probably won't get to see the new Dr. Who series until it's released on DVD some day, any of you in the UK who get a chance to see it can feel free to keep us Americans up to date on any Dr. Who news and reviews.

Piper was on Parkinson last weekend, promoting Dr. Who. She seemed really genuine etc.

I'll definately watch the first one, on Saturday, and see how it goes from there.

All the clips and stuff they've been showing look really good. So, hopefully...

Apart from a few silly bits and a lame way to beat the bad guys, I really liked the first episode, especially the characterisation. Eccleston makes a great Doctor.

I love Chris Eccleston as the Doctor. I watched the "leaked" copy of Rose a few weeks ago, and he really made me happy by having elements of some of my favorite versions of the character.

If you want to visit a good website visit http://www.gallifreyone.com . It's run by my friend Shaun.

The new series will be on DVD in Fall 2005 here in the States if we don't get it sooner. But I'm really excited by it!

Yeah, I watched it last night, the only thing that annoyed me was.. Why would the Manikin makers build guns into their hands? :p

Other than that though, i thought it was good. I thought Billie did a good job as Rose (I think it's just britain that she's best known for being a pop star.)

I'll watch it next week.:)

I must say I very much enjoyed it. Lame way to stop the invasion, but that's been the way of Doctor Who many a time. This was really an episode about the characters (great) and also a chance to show the effects the show now commands.

I was a bit confused when he commented on his appearence in the mirror, since he's apparently been in this incarnation for some time. Was that just for the audience? Or had he simply not had a chance to stop and look at himself with all his dashing around Earth's history?

I've enjoyed the doctor in every incarnation, and Eccleston looks like being no exception.

.:TSN:.
03-28-2005, 12:06 PM
Remember that Dr Who can travel in time.. So maybe this was his first adventure and all those in photos still havent happened? Which I think you mean by being in this incarnation for long time..

This was so cheesy..... but I loved it!!! It was totally silly and far fetched, but it was classical Dr. Who as we love it. I will continue to watch it... finally the BBC have done something right! :D

I am very impressed with the actor's, especially Billy Piper, I think she did a great job and all credit to her for that!

Lambshank

Haha, awesome!

I never watched the old Doctor Who, so I don't know how this compares, but it seemed to have that cheesiness and lameness you always see in old shows but never complain about because that's how what it used to be like.

I can't wait for the next episode, the prospect of someone been able to travel anywhere in time to any place in the universe is to good of an oppurtunity to turn down.

I thought Dr Who was potrayed in an interesting and whacky way to.

Oh yeah, does Dr Who have any powers? I don't mean like fireballs or super strength, I mean like.. Is he super-smart or psychic in any way?

applecrash
03-30-2005, 06:25 PM
That "cheesiness" and "lameness" you're referring to is, what I think, makes the show appealing to people of all ages. It has always been a show for the whole family although parts of it can be a bit frightening for youngsters.

The Doctor, as a timelord, does have the ability to travel just about anyplace and any time in the universe. The TARDIS, though, has a history of not always going where he and his companions expected to go.

Although the Doctor is quite smart and technically an alien, he doesn't really have what I would call special powers, but abilities that are different than any that most humans would have. Instead of dying when he is severely injured, his body regenerates into a completely new form. He's currently in his ninth incarnation.

It's nice to see the new Doctor Who attracting new fans. Welcome aboard!

Quite shocking news, considering it only started again, not a week ago...

Eccleston quits Doctor Who role

Actor Christopher Eccleston has quit as Doctor Who after just one episode of the new series has been screened, the BBC has confirmed.

That's terribly unfortunate news. Eccleston seemed to be getting great reviews for his performance. No one has ever voluntarily walked out of this role after such a short period.

I know someone else will come along to play the part just as in the past, but I really wish Eccleston would have stuck with it longer. I'm rather disappointed in him now.

I was pretty shocked, and although this doesn't make it all that better, he has done the equivilant of two Dr. Who series'. Im not sure if it said it in the article, i was watching the news, but he's going to come back and do a Christmas special aswell, before leaving completely.

Enjoyed tonight's episode.

I can't believe that Eccleston has quit after one season.... you'd think he'd grasp how well it did on the ratings and use it to claw more money off the BBC for playing the character, but no, he quit's. He's never going to work again after this, as no network will trust him enough to cast him in a series role. He'll be lucky to get bit part's after that stunt! He'll be lucky if the BBC don't sue him for losses in merchandising aswell!

Really liked tonight's episode. Much better than the opening one.

A shame Eccleston's leaving (his Cracker run was similarly brief) but it's his choice. I'm sure there'll be lots of work for him in the future (which there might not have been if he'd had a prolonged stay in the role). Guess we'll have to enjoy him while we can.

I am gutted Eccleston's leaving, but at least we've got plenty of episodes still to come. I enjoyed last nights. I actually thought it was pretty well-paced. The 45 minute eps work well.

Nice to see the 8th doctor novels worked in. I thought they just might keep quiet about gallifrey throughout the series.

Didn't comment about last weeks episode, it was pretty good. Thought this weeks was better though..

It was nice to see the travelling effecting Rose's family, and the scene where the spaceship crashed through 'Big Ben' (before anyone gets onto me, I know the clock tower itself isn't called 'Big Ben' - I don't care though) was cool as hell, looked pretty realistic.

Never seen David Tennant in anything, so I've no real positive or negative reaction to the casting.

The third episode was okay; last weeks was better. Is the series going to be shown in America? I'd heard Sci-Fi was unhappy with it. Personally, I reckon many Americans would be hard pressed to follow it thanks to the accents.

Did you see the Daleks episode on Saturday.

I have to say that was a great episode and the Dalek getting some human emotions was a great touch.

I loved the first scene with the Doctor and the Dalek - just the way the Doctor didn't know what was in the room and when he said I'm the Doctor and the Dalek responded with "Doctor" "The Doctor" and then the Doc relised who was in the room with him and was totally scared. That was well written and directed - brilliant.

Oh ****, what an awesome episode.

This one had it all, emotions, drama, great monsters; 'Nothing in the universe can harm them'.

I LOVE the way people were killed off, this show really showed no mercy, little kids were killed, even the Doctor! Ok, fair enough, they all come back in the end, but it's great to see a tv show with the balls to kill off so many innocent characters.

And who would have thought Billy Piper would have shon so brightly in this episode? She has moments where I think she delivers lines terribly, but for the most part she has played her role safely, and really showed off some hidden talent this episode.

Definately the best episode so far.

Yeah it's a 2 parter... it was pretty creepy that kid going round saying "where's my mummy, are you my mummy?" My kids were really scared by it this week and didn't want to watch it... funny how the monsters last week didn't bother them, yet this did. Viewer Ratings for Saturday were 6.6 million

and in today's Daily Mirror there is this article:

EXCLUSIVE: BILLIE 'SET TO LEAVE' DR WHO

BILLIE Piper is said to be set to quit Doctor Who in a second blow to the BBC.

The actress, who plays sidekick Rose Tyler, has already made up her mind to leave, according to a top sci-fi magazine.

Her decision comes weeks after the Doctor, Christopher Eccleston, announced he was walking out on the TV programme.

According to sources, Billie's spokesman has confirmed to the next issue of Dreamwatch magazine that she will appear in only handful of episodes - possibly as few as three - in the next series.

Speculation is now rife about who will take 22-year-old Billie's place.

Singer Rachel Stevens is thought to be keen on expanding her acting repertoire and EastEnders star Michelle Ryan could make a good assistant.

A BBC insider said: "It would appear that Billie has already made up her mind that she is leaving.

"She is a great actress but she does not want to become typecast.

"Christopher Eccleston's departure has probably helped influence her decision too."

A BBC spokeswoman could not confirm or deny that Billie was quitting.

She said yesterday: "Billie is definitely returning for the second series and will be in a number of episodes but I can't tell you how many."

Christopher Eccleston quit in March after fearing he would be typecast.

The BBC have replaced him with Casanova star David Tennant.

I hate actors, I really do.

Do they have no respect for the fans or the things they star in?

Dr Who has pulled in some amazing ratings, yet both of it's stars use weak excuses such as 'not wanting to be typecast'. How about this then, DON'T SIGN UP TO THE ******* SHOW IN THE FIRST PLACE IF YOU DON'T WANNA BE TYPE-CAST.

They sign up, get themselves a bit of recognition and then shove off the moment they think they can achieve better things, I guess actors really couldn't give a **** how it effects the fans.

05-24-2005, 06:36 AM
Can't say I blame 'em really. Billie has been getting a lot of offers.

The last couple of episodes have been fantastic though. I really wouldn't expect next year to be the same without Chris and Billie, but if they can keep the writing up who knows? It's a real shame there's just a few episodes left with them together.

Smallvillenews
05-24-2005, 09:43 AM
Yeah, I've really enjoyed the on screen chemistry between Billie and Chris in their respective roles. I don't really know how the next season will go, guess we'll have to wait and see... but I agree, it's a shame that they can't just stick at something for longer than a season. I don't think either of them will be trusted again with a similar show, cause the producer's would be afraid of them dropping out. It could be a bad move for both of them if they don't make it big in the states. I mean yeah, they may have had the offer's, but it's actually making it work with an American audience... they might regret this later. I'd rather be typecast and in a job than struggling to make it big.

I'm not really shocked that the cast is being changed already, but you have to give them props for picking up David Tennant (I think I'm misspelling his name) and keeping the same writing staff.

I honestly don't look for the series to change too much even if we lose the two lead actors that we're watching now. Besides, WHO continuity has been consistently like this. Chris and Billie have their reasons and after they have filled their contracts, their free to do as they will.

I'm loving Chris' take on the character and Rose is a sweet heart kind of character. Just wish the BBC would show it in America on one of the mainstream channels or at least let a network like FOX or the WB pick it up. On second thought, let's just keep this puppy of a series protected.

Smallvillenews
05-26-2005, 04:35 AM
Yeah, I love how Chris has played the character, he seems to be able to make the character of the doctor seem genuinely and utterly besotted with earth, it's people and it's varied cultures. He just oozes fascination in his portrayal of the doctor, without going over the top or making it look like a farce. I love that about this season and I hope the next guy can play the doctor in the same way... cetainly with the old series of Doctor Who, the last 2 people to play him were way to over the top and I couldn't stand watching it. Hopefully with the same script writer's and crew behind camera it will be just as good... hopefully!!! :)

Yeap, typos on my part. My mind is thinking but the words aren't coming out on the page.

The return of the Daleks. "Exterminate."

It's nice to see them back and dealing with the Doctor again. I dug the Dalek episode and knew they would be coming back at some point, just didn't fully know when.

06-13-2005, 04:21 AM
I wish Chris was staying until at least the end of the second series. But no point worrying about that now! Besides which it doesn't look like he could hope to bow out on a better episode than this weeks finale. I had goosebumps watching the preview.

I like Captain Jack. He's well played and brings a nice sense of fun to the show. The trouble is The Doctor and Rose are so tight you don't strictly need a third companion.

The reality tv episode was great albeit with a few cringe-worthy moments. Nice of the previous trailer to give the game away as to who the villains were. Interesting that even centuries into the future Big Brother still uses that same theme music.

I thought this was probably the best ep. of the series so far with the other Dalek ep. coming a close second.

With the Daleks survivng does that mean the Gallifreans (Is that right?) might have survived?

Billie will stay with new Doctor

Billie Piper will stay as Doctor Who's assistant Rose Tyler for the second series of the new show, it's reported.
She had been tipped to leave series two after only a couple of episodes, but according to a Sunday newspaper she is staying for the whole series.

That's good news for BBC bosses, as Christopher Ecclestone who plays the Doctor won't be back next year.

David Tennant is replacing him as the man with sonic screwdriver, and Billie staying may make the change easier.

The science fiction magazine Dreamwatch had reported the actress would be leaving after two or three episodes.

The second series of the updated Doctor Who starts filming in Cardiff in July.

The second is the mother, I don't recall her name but she was in the Aliens of London and World War 3 two-parter.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-17-2005, 06:57 PM
It goes through the biggest key villians of the series, but like the BBC site says it actually skips out on these last couple of episodes.

It is helping me learn a little bit more about certain Doctors and their individual ordeals. I was expecting a thicker book but it actually holds a lot of information inside of it.

Plently of sketches and designs are present within the book and backstory is covered on every Dalek encounter and so on and so forth.

I'm loving every page.

Pretty much the same thing as Who conventions actors and fans get together and buy, sell, and trade stuff, go through autographs. Consider that the show was filmed 8 months ago.

We only have the facts that they've been giving us up until this point. If he does make it through this episode, I'll be surprised since he wanted to just move after this one.

Like I said before we'll just have to wait it out. Doesn't matter just as long as its as strong an episode as the previous stories.

TMLS' BROTHER

Hope so

I like the fact that the Daleks fly in Outer space.

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-17-2005, 07:46 PM
Close as I can figure it is - the Daleks were improving themselves for battle. From the books, that I read they were a waring species and they continually changed their stragedies.

The Daleks at this point are at the strongest they can possibly be. We must also consider the Doctor's memory is not fully up to speed, like the Doctor Dances.

Finale Spoilers below... avoid if you haven't seen it yet.

Last warning

"I am the god of all Daleks..."

I was seriously expecting Davros here. Not sorry I was wrong though, and this made much more sense since pretty much all the new stuff should be self-contained. The utter insanity of the worshipping Daleks was great.

About half way through I began to wonder if this had been written as if it were the last episode ever, with the TARDIS going to die and The Doctor's speech. They really wrong-footed me there.

It was ruined for me that the regeneration would take place. Imagine watching this ep with no spoilers. I was puzzled when we got to the last few minutes and Ecclestone was still fine. Fantastic regeneration effect. Great battle scenes. Horrific deaths. (Good grief they dragged out the death of the weakest link winner.)

Rose was pretty frightening towards the end. Captain Jack got a fantastic exit (and fantastic exit line). Er... then got brought back. Oh well, his days as a companion are probably over but it'd be great to see him again.

Doctor Who will be back in 'Thunderball'. Or 'The Christmas Invasion' or something. Can't wait.

Review from someone on tv.com (formally TvTome.com)

Contains Spoilers...

__________________________________________________
I looked forward to Doctor Who 2005. I must admit that. On seeing the first episode I as bewildered and intrigued. Christopher Ecclestone looked like a fab doctor, and Billie Piper looked impressive as an assistant.

The show didn't pick up in my opinion, until the first episode that Russell T. Davies didn't write.

Then came the farting alien episodes and I began to despise Mr. Davies.

The Dalek entrance was fantastic. Then Mr. Davies wrote another one. Although seeing Simon Pegg was a series highlight, the story was sillily executed, and had Londeners in the future. It's hard to believe that so far into the future, space stations will have trading bazaars where people speak as they do in Eastenders.

Father's Day was a beautiful episode, and was followed by Stephen Moffat's fantastic two part story.

Then it was the turn of Mr. Davies who returned to the farting aliens, before writing the weskest half an hour of television ever. Big Brother and The Weakest Link do not belong in science fiction. They were laughable additions and showed just how out of touch Mr Davies is with intelligent science fiction.

The Daleks however ramped up the episode to a decent 4/10, and with the promise of a battle for the final episode I was looking forward to it.

So here it was. And what a disappointment it was. Poorly paced from the outset with no tension. The comedy was misplaced and the show seemed utterly directionless. Worst of all the Daleks were reduced to quiverign wrecks. Apart from Lynda's death scene they hardly seemed scary at all, and I could have done without seeing the crew of Satellite 5 on floor 0 scrambling around. Granted they all got killed but hey, we didn't see it happen and we had to listen to them beforehand.

The Dalek's also suffered from somethign they dont normally suffer from. The ancient art of monloguing. Monologuing covers up one thing. The writers inability to wrack up the tension.

However I saw right through it.

Good Points:
Captain Jack's death scene. I had a sneaky suspicion it was coming and I liked him. It was sad and so was him being deserted.
The resurrection. There was no need in my opinion for the BBC to annoucne Ecclestone had quit. They could have dealt with it internally, and given us one hell of a shock at the end. But still bring on Tennant.
Lynda's death scene.

Bad Points:
Naf Daleks
Naf Dalek leader
No Tenstion
Back in London (again)
Londoner's talking. Grates my nerves.
The cop out ending where Rose saves the day.
Monologuing Daleks. Just kill the damn doctor already.

Im tentatively looking forward to Doctor Who 2006, but one thing would make me look forward to it more. Russell T. Davies's decision to quit.

First of all is "sillily" even a word?

I don't agree with any of this review. He (i think it was a he) writes like he suffered through the entire series, being forced to watch it.

Now, he may be a fan of previous doctors, he might have felt that he had to watch it to see how it faired against the others... But... If that were the case, would he not have known the word "regeneration"?

I don't know. This Doctor Who series was the first one i've seen, and although it started off kinda weird with the mannequins.. It finished on a real high, or at least I thought so. I can't believe someones opinion of the series would be so different.

The resurrection. There was no need in my opinion for the BBC to annoucne Ecclestone had quit. They could have dealt with it internally, and given us one hell of a shock at the end. But still bring on Tennant.

The way I understand it is that the Beeb weren't going to announce Ecclestone's departure or anything to do with Tennant taking over until after Saturday's episode. Unfortunately, one of the tabloids was interviewing Ecclestone when he let it slip he wouldn't be returning and so they had to admit it. Then they weren't going to announce Tennant but the tabloids found out about him being in the last episode so a compromise was reached where he was announced as the Doctor but leaving it vague as to when he would first appear.

Just imagine how awesome it would have been if we hadn't a clue...

Back in London (again)

Well, Cardiff :D

That's been my biggest annoyance, but could be because I recognised so many places because my best mate used to live there (in fact, the little side street at the end of "Rose" where she runs to the TARDIS was the exact spot I used to drop my mate off for work, freaky!).

I finally managed to catch the season finale and all I can say is WOW!

12 episodes of build-up and it pays off like this. Can't wait to see David Tennant in action.

BBC has already begun the countdown to The Christmas Invasion. Geez, it's like 6 months away! Still, you can't accuse them of not promoting the show.

The only episode of the whole series I thought was anything less than great was the first Slytheen episode, and I thought the second part made up for it.

Too early to say really, especially after all the secrecy that surrounded most of the first series. There's some speculation but no more than that. Could well be a totally new villain.

The Cybermen will be back in Season 2, and it's rumored that we'll see Sarah Jane Smith and K-9 too.

Some confirmed titles so far for S2, beyond "The Christmas Invasion," include "School Reunion," "Army of Ghosts," and "The Satan Pit."

I had heard about the Cybermen... But didn't know if it had been confirmed, or just rumours.

Did they not have them in that military bunker thing, where you they saw the ''last'' dalek... While walking through the museum bit, was not implied that everything in there was dead/extinct?

LexLuthorMetropolis
06-21-2005, 11:27 PM
Yeah, they were in the bunker but just like the Daleks they may not be out of the equation. Davis could bring them back somehow.

I get that nothings ever truely dead... but bringing them back would be a lot like bringing back the Daleks. I dunno.. Im sure the second season will be just as good, if not better than the first.. No matter what villan they choose.

In the DOCTOR WHO: MONSTERS AND VILLIANS book it never specifically says he if the race of Cyberman was wiped out and it covers every episode that they have been in.

I'd expect Russell and his team of writers to explore them from a classical, yet, new angle. The Doctor himself may assume their dead, but we have been proven wrong before.

I'm eagerly awaiting the new season as well. Waiting until Dec. is going to feel like an eternity.

If you've got a multi-region DVD player, you can get the DVDs of the new series for $24.50 each from http://www.whona.com/whonamainframe.mv

Also looks like they'll be a good source of info for whenever it's going to be shown over there...

I believe the Doctor put it best in episode three, when he stated that time is in a constant state of flux. What they may have stopped, may have happened, but it doesn't entirely gurantee that something else won't come along and play around with history and alter in some sort of fashion.

As for people seeing the T.A.R.D.I.S., I would think people would pretty much just ignore it. People have a tendency to ignore the most simplistic things and make up reasons for them existing. What's to say they didn't there? But alas, I leave this open for your opinions.

All of the music on the show is scored directly through their in-house music group but there are many cases where they're not. The scores you're talking about we're scored specifically for the show as far as I know and are unavailable to sell. At least, as far as I know.

TMLS' BROTHER
09-19-2005, 12:23 PM
Yeah.

I really don't expect much from Tennant at all. I want Eccelstone (sp?) back.

LexLuthorMetropolis
09-19-2005, 12:27 PM
As much as I would like Eccelston back, I think Tennant is going to offer us something fresh and new, but still be similar to the previous Doctor but not. If anything I feel Tennant is suited to take over since he has plenty of experience in various acting areas and he constantly has a knack for getting himself involved. If the teaser at the end was anything, I think we'll be having a ball.

And I really don't think Russell T. Davis intents to dissapoint us with Tennant. They brought him aboard on a long term basis, which means we'll be able to see more of him than our beloved Eccelston.

I'm ready to see more and besides he retains all the memories of the previous Doctors.

TMLS' BROTHER
09-19-2005, 12:31 PM
Yeah. I have faith in Russel T. Davis. But after seeing Tennant act in Casanova I don't think he is right for the role of Doctor Who, of course I felt the same way with Eccelston when I first heard about him lol.

Tennant and Eccelston are nothing like the other 8 Doctors IMO.
