He's quite sick at the moment. He was hospitalized with problems breathing plus he has the flu.

He just the same as the rest of us.....I'm not catholic, but I am Non-dinomanational(Like luthern)
Its not like he has more "spiritual" greatness. Gpd looks at us all the same.

You should know by now that there are many who simply cannot hide their intolerance for the beliefs of others. Funny how often they're the first to stand up and screech that everyone else should be tolerant of theirs.
BTW, haven't heard anything-- any more news on the Pope?

This time it's serious. Even the local news radio station is keeping a open line to the Vatican so that they can keep everyone up to date the minute something happens.
Hes been getting worse the last few years, its a pitty he just cant retire, from what Ive heard though, he is the only person who can decide when to leave his position.
Honestly I know it sounds bad, but I hope he doesnt have long left so he wont suffer much longer.

The Pope is still in his private quarter's at his request. He is very sick and it is believed his body is slowly shuting down now. I have the news on at the moment and they are saying that the blinds are up and the lights are on in his room... this is a signal to the people who have gathered in the square that he is still alive. They will close the blinds if he passes away.

Apparently he is having a communion, that only the dying or terminally sick usually get, so it's not good for the Pope......I think he had a heart attack last night...(on our radio station over here).
He's been around like forever, & even survivied being shot a few years ago.....but somehow I don't think he's gonna make iit this time...

That is a shame.Anyone who is about to die is terrible....
But once he dies,if he dies,he will find peace. How can death be so bad if he will find peace?
He did what he had to do in this world, and now he has reached full circle. Not surprising, death will happen to all of us...
I am truly sorry of all of this though.

Very very sad news.Well,as I said before,he did what he had to do in this world.
One thing is for sure:He will be missed....
Hey I'm from Italy so maybe I can tell you something, not that I'm a Catholic. But even though I'm not, I respect him, and all the good things he did over the past years, and he has done many. He was - in my opinion - the best Pope the world has had in its whole long history, and the saddest thing for me is that he'll soon be replaced by a young fella who maybe doesn't know anything about religion.
Martin Luther (not King, I'm talking about the German monk who lived in the 16th century) was right after all, the Church is all about money and corruption I think. But anyways that's John Paul II (aka Karol Wojtyla) we're supposed to talk about. He's not in the best conditions, and probably won't make it till the end of the week.
How many of you knew that he is the son of two Jews who had to escape from Poland when Hitler looked for them and were deported in the concentration camps. His parents secretly managed to give him to some Catholic neighbours when he was still a baby and thus was raised by two Catholics.
What if his parents didn't have to give him away?

As you all may know, our Pope from the last 27 years has gone into a rather critical state of health. I was wondering what people thought and what you think might happen if, God forbid, he might pass away in the next few days.

They have already said numerous times that his death is imenent, and that there is no hope for the pope. This is comming from the Vatican. Now I know this is Mr. Miracle Comebacker, but the feeling around Rome right now, especially for those standing outside of the Vatican, is they are praying for a quicke release with no suffering, more than they are praying for a recovery. I also pray for this. He was a great man to say the least.

Since he's suffering so badly then we can only hope for a quick release without any more pain. I also heard on the news that he's had last rites so they must not think he will recover. You're right, it would be better to pray for him to have no more suffering than to pray for him to linger on in pain.

Now I have many questions, like, who will be the next Pope?
How much time do they need to elect another one?
Ahhhh I dont want the Pope to die,he is such a fine lad,
deserves something better! It is a shame that with our technology we cant cure him!!
The elections for new Popes are always extremely secret, all the bishops from all over the world gather in the Vatican and discuss for days. They argue a lot, and at the end some white steam is let out of a chimney.
I heard they have to have a 2/3 +1 majority to elect the new pope. And if after 30 votes if they still can't get that many to agree, only then will they go with the majority.
Sadly, it's not looking good for him. I think it's really just a matter of time before they make the announcement that he has passed away. Last I heard he was drifting out of conciousness. :(

actually, its not the bishops, its the cardinals
during conclave, which is held 15 days after the death of a pope,
they discuss for a short while, and then decide to vote, if the vote is null they let burn the vote ballots with a special gas that emmits a black smoke,
thus representing : "i vote, no pope elected"
they do that until they get the numbers needed to elect a new pope (must be cardinal between ages of 65 and 79).
when the vote is conclusive, they burn the ballots with another gas that emmits a white smoke.
other than this, the only way a pope can be elected is if the cardinals start chanting someones name in unison because of a great feat or
something that "impresses the mass of cardinals"
when that happens, the new pope can be anyone, with no restriction
if i remember right, the longest conclave in history was a few weeks.
they are strictly sheltered from the outside world, no electricity or anything, all windows shut, only means of sommunication a chimney stack to show the people how many votes happened and if theres a new pope elected.

I was extremely upset over the news of Pope John Paul II's death. I was one of millions who attended World Youth Day 1993 when it was held here, at my home, Denver Colorado. I was literally 5-10 feet from him at one point during the event. It was the single greatest thing I've seen thus far in my life. The emotions and the love and the message of tolerance and forgiveness he stood for were not just meant for Catholics, but for all of humankind.
My greatest fear is that the next Pope to be elected will not continue the works of Pope John Paul II-who really did look to the youth for the future of the church, and of the world. I hope, and pray, that I am wrong, and that the church-and the WORLD-only gets stronger with time.
It's been a sad day for me...

Actually, any male (under 80) willing to be baptized into the Church may be elected Pope, not just cardinals. It's usually a cardinal, though, obviously.

Again, there are no restrictions except those I've already mentioned, anyway.

The longest conclave in history was 33 months, stretching from 1268 to 1271, and emerging with (I think) Pope Gregory X. The longest conclave in the 20th century, however, was 5 days.
And... I do believe the Domus Sanctae Mariae hotel and the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican have electricity! :p They might use candles as part of tradition.
Just wanted to make sure everyone's got the right info.
But anyway, the Church is in mourning. We pray for him to enter Heaven swiftly and receive his reward in the glory of God at last. John Paul II served Him well, and we will miss him. I'm so thankful to see how this has affected the world, though. It's incredible.
His health turned around so fast... at least that's what it felt like. :( When I heard the news yesterday I was stunned... it was like... I don't know... I was just in dumb shock. I couldn't even cry, until I got to the cathedral (thank goodness for hoodies!) It still feels strange to have the papacy vacant, no more JPII. He's "the Pope", you know? It will be hard to get used to whoever succeeds him... :\
:( I'm wearing black for these 9 days. Anyone with me?
