Id go with Martin Scorsese for best director.Hes a longtime director-a legend-and has never won.Easily the sentimental choice. And maybe Leonardo Dicaprio as best actor to make up for his Titanic snub.

They have some good choices this year. The best actor category is going to be a hard choice to choose from. But I have a feeling its going to be between Leo Dicaprio and Jamie Foxx. I wouldn't be suprised if either of these win. Johnny Depp would come in close 3rd. He did an awesome job in finding neverland. Overall as I've already said they have good pics this year. It will be hard to predict the rest of the categories.
eh... The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition DVD should have gotten an Oscar nod :p
I know one movie thats getting Zilch!
Michael Moore's gamble to hold his hit film "Fahrenheit 9/11" out of the documentary category - to boost its best-picture prospects - backfired. The movie was shut out across the board. http://apnews.myway.com/article/20050125/D87R5NS01.html
*points at Moore* Ha HA!
I'm behind "Finding Neverland". I loved it and cried like a little monkey baby.
I was sad that "Garden State" didn't get some love...very good movie.

Its a scam anyway, most of the movies are only there because they are recent releases. except a few like maria full of grace... and eternal sunshine (which was amazing)

Poor Moore. That movie was good the best part was when he and a soldier were asking congressman to enlist their children and they were all like oh hell no!

Anyone surprised that Passion of the Christ wasen't nominated for Best Picture? All the networks kept bringing it up yesterday and doing polls.

im not surprised, in retrospect it was not a strong movie, after a second viewing you can see it's flaws
Maria Full of grace was an awesome movie! im so glad the actress got nominated, it's been a while since a latino got nominated, and for best actress no less! she might not win but it speaks volumes for her acting.
Eternal sunshine is spectacular!
as for million dollar baby meh! it don't get why there's so much buzz
Jamie Foxx must win for Ray.

Agreed. The Oscars have their good years, and they have their bad years. This year is a sell-out year. What I mean by that is, this is a year when a lot of the popular movies are nominated while lots of the really good stuff is left out. For example, although The Phantom of the Opera was nominated for 3 Academy Awards, it wasn't nominated for Costume Design, which I think is an absolute atrocity. IMO, Spider-Man 2 was the best movie of the year, but the Academy never seems to think that sci-fi/fantasy is good for anything but visual effects.
BTW, last year was a pretty crappy year also. Yeah, I LOVE LotR, but The Return of the King definitely wasn't the best movie in the trilogy (that award should go to The Fellowship of the Ring) and sure as hell didn't deserve the Best Editing award (yes, the ending bothered me, too!). If they were going to pour Oscars on LotR, they should have spread 'em out a little!
Anyways, these are really the only two awards my heart is set on:
Best Actor - Johnny Depp
Best Cinematography - The Phantom of the Opera
I would really love to see The Village win Best Original Score, but I doubt that will happen. Besides, I have yet to see M. Night Shyamalan nominated for Best Original Screenplay or Best Director. Those stupid cop-outs...

My picks are:
Best Actor = Don Cheadle - Hotel Rwanda.
Supporting Role = Morgan Freeman - Million Dollar Baby.
Best Actress = Hilary Swank - Million Dollar Baby.
Supporting Role = Laura Linney - Kinsey.
Animated Feature = Shrek 2.
Art Direction = The Aviator.
Cinamatography = The Passion.
Costume Design = Lemony Snickets.
Directing = Million Dollar Baby.
Editing = The Aviator.
Make-up = The Passion.
Song = "Believe" The Polar Express.
Best Picture = The Aviator.
Origional Screenplay = Eternal Sunshine.
Adapted Screenplay = Million Dollar Baby.
I haven't seen many of these movies, but I am making an educated guess based on trailers and past experience of watching the oscars live all through the night every year!! :p I reckon I have picked up a few pointers by now! :)
I'm also surprised that yet again they have chosen to only nominate recent movies, many of which haven't even aired in the UK yet and won't for some time!! I'm sure that some of the other movies that were released this last year deserved a look in. The recent movies that have been nominated could have waited for next years nominations, then it's a truer representation of the years movies that have been viewed already.

I think "The Passion of the Christ" should have gotten an Oscar nomination for best movie. I know it has been nominated in other categories, but come on. This movie did better at the box office that most of those other ones. Dont get me wrong their were a lot of great movies this year, but "Passion" deserves atleast to be nominated. I doubt I'll even watch the Oscars because of this. By the way I think Spiderman II should have been included in some way also.

 if a movie should get an oscar nod because of it's revenue then i guess ice cube should get a nod for best actor next year for his pivitol role in "Are We There Yet?"
 im kidding by the way :p

Ha! Good point. What I should have said is it should have gotten a nomination because of the many people who saw it and liked it. By the way "Are We There Yet" would have to go a long, long way to make as much revenue as "The Passion." I just hope it was not snubbed because its a religous movie.

What movie won Best Picture the year Jaws came out? I haven't cared about these things since I was nine for this very reason.
As for Passion-- I don't know what flaws were in it, other than the fact that I couldn't understand a word anyone said :p , but what difference does it make whether a bunch of people you've never heard of liked it or not? If you loved it, if it meant something to you, that should be all that matters.
I do know it's annoying, though. I still wonder what's going on every once in awhile when a movie I loved gets left off the list. But then I remember what I just said above, laugh and move on.
BTW, did Are We There Yet _really_ make as much money as The Passion of the Christ? We _are_ doomed! :rotfl:
And my question is already answered. Thank you!

Your right. If you liked it should be all that matters, but what if you were Mel Gibson and worked so hard on this picture and it got snubbed simply because the movie was religous in nature. He says he doesnt care (and maybe he doesnt since he's rolling in the money now), but I know I would be upset. I wouldnt be saying this if I honestly didnt think it deserved a nomination, but I do. Dont worry, though. Im not going to lose any sleep over it.

I do see what you mean there about Gibson, but he probably knew when he made the picture that it probably wouldn't garner any Oscar attention simply because of its story. 'Course he may be annoyed by the snub simply because of all the people who worked on the film, his desire that they be recognized.

Because of the subject matter of "The Passion", I believe that Mel Gibson is perfectly happy not to get an Oscar for it, simply because, he did it to honour Jesus. He made the film to be a powerful witness and I don't believe he wants to be glowering in the praise and glory of winning an oscar for it.... after all, Jesus didn't get an oscar for his performance.... if you know what I mean. :( Mel Gibson himself has said he wanted the movie to move people and to be a witness to Jesus, not to himself as a movie maker. I think it is credit to him to say that and he will be rewarded in other ways!!

Wow, I didn't know he was hosting it. That will be great, if he's as funny as he is in his movies it should be a good laugh and it will need to be to keep me awake for the whole night... I usually stay up and watch it live, but here in the U.K. that means it doesn't start until 2 a.m. :D I usually climb into bed at about 5.30 a.m. or later if it runs over. :D Cool news!

In the past I've tried to see all of the nominees before forming an opinion. I've been so busy with grad school lately that I haven't had a chance to see any of these movies yet!
My girlfriend and I have plans to see Sideways tomorrow night, though, so if we can just squeeze in the other four movies by Sunday night, I'll let you know my picks.

Does anyone feel Morgan Freeman should get a little more respect than Jamie Foxx? Everyone is saying if Foxx doesn't win it's an outrage, but what about Freeman. One of the finest actors around for years is being overlooked by a person who just started doing serious films.

I haven't seen Morgan Freeman's movie yet. But, I just watched Ray tonight. And I have to say that I was very impressed with Jamie Foxx. That was one of the best performances that I've ever seen. Even without seeing the other nominees' movies, it's hard to imagine seeing a performance that can top that.

I agree-I LOVED this movie-I thought it was hilarious. If nothing else I thought Zach Braff earned an original screenplay nod. Oh well, my favorites are usually never recognized anyway.
I am only watching the Oscars this year to see Josh Groban sing the song from Polar Express (and as morbid as it may be, to see the montage of deceased actors too-especially Christopher Reeve). The status of the Oscars has lost too much face with me (snubbing Passion among many other things), it's all a popularity contest anyway. It is pretty cool this year that they're doing awards in the audience-saves time by not having the winners have to walk clear from the very back of the theatre!
Chris Rock has been ok as host-I personally love Billy Crystal though
(just watched the IN Memorium montage-and I thought there would have been much more applause for Christopher Reeve-and I wished they would have shown another clip, like from Remember the Time)
As for my picks, with half the show over, and The Aviator winning almost every award, I have a bad feeling it'll win Best Picture. I did see it, and it was good, but nowhere near Best Picture material. It's too frustrating-I don't know why I torture myself...
Ya I noticed the extra applause for Christopher Reeve.
How did Spidey 2 win on effects, they were terrible.

Anyone else extremely annoyed (well, frankly I'm pi$$ed beyond belief) that they had frickin' Beyonce (who I cannot stand anyway) singing with Josh Groban!!!!!!!!!!! For one, he does not need anyone to help him carry that (or any!) song-and for another they sounded horrible together! All I wanted was to hear Josh sing, and I only got about half the fix I wanted-I'm so annoyed right now.
Anyway, just needed to vent...
i actually laughed when i seen spiderman in that, he looks like plastic, I couldnt actually believe he looks worse than in spidey 1.
Like sets look fine, but when it comes to a cgi characters, especially doc oc, they are terrible.

I thought they were great also. And apparently some people who know more about filming than me thought they did too.
I'm so glad Jamie Foxx won best actor! Even though I didn't get a chance to see the other actors, I just thought he was great. One of the best performances I've seen in the last few years.
I do alot of 3d work, and I speak to alot of guys who work in the industry, I havent asked them about what they thought, but I do get to see alot of what can be done (even by home users) and its alot better than spiderman. (just watch the part where spidey and doc oc are fighting on the roof top, you can see that doc oc is very plasticy looking)
A friend of mine is studying for game/film modelling, and we seen it at the cinema when it first came out, there were 6 of us there, but only the 2 of us really noticed anything, I think its when you work with the things you can just spot them easier, or you keep your eyes open more
I mean dont get me wrong, I liked the spiderman films, there not great, but they are enjoyable, the effects are good too, I mean there 3d cities and the virtual sets in general are really good, but I just think the characters look bad, honestly I think they tried to make them more cartoonish to make it more like a comic/cartoon, because they are worse than spidey 1.
John Dykstra has done some great fx over the years, and he deserves awards, I just feel that spiderman 2 didnt deserve it.
Thats my opinion anyway, and you guys have yours, if we all agreed it would be a boring world :D

It was awesome that Morgan got the Oscar... he was way overdue one in my opinion!
I would have liked Don Cheadle to win best actor or Leo though, rather than Jamie Foxx. I guess because I've seen more of their performances and think they deserved it more because of past performances aswell. But I think it was obvious to most that Jamie would steal it!
I think it was sad for Annette Benning, she had it stolen away for a 2nd time by Hilary Swank... a rerun of a few years ago, when she was in the running with her then. I hope she get's another chance, as I think she is quite underated really.
I think it was a travesty for Martin Scorsese. That poor man, it's a wonder he doesn't give it up... so many nominations and yet never a winner. It should have been his year and I think it was just plain cruel not to award him. What are the judges playing at, have they got some grudge against him or what?? Clint has already got an Oscar, he didn't have to get one this year!!!
