After a long waiting, the Star Wars films have been finally realesed into the DVD format. In my opinion, this classic Trilogy has been one of the most changed films in history.

The original VHS format,in the late 1980s had minor modifications but still they were the original films as we remember them.

In the late 1990s,George Lucas wanted to do a special edition....adding new things into the films.

The results were amazing,it enhanced the movie experience as a whole. The explosion of the Death Star in Episode IV was redone and it was great. They even added new sound fx to the ships controls. But as for the new DVD realeses....well they even changed and replaced some scenes! The end of Return of the Jedi was also changed again and they even erased the appearence of one actor....the original spirit of Anakin Skywalker to be repleced with the actor that played Anakin in the prequels!

Oh well....how many more changes can they be?

It was rumored that even Jhon Williams wanted to add some new music, especially at the beggining of Episode IV,when we see Lord Vader for the first time.He was thinking in adding the Imperial March into that scene.

Oh well, for those fans who saw the Special Editions in 1997 and the new DVD editions, what do you think of the changes and which one is your favorite Star Wars movie?

Roads?Where we are going we dont need, roads!

I got mine today. Worth the money. A New Hope was, as always, the most noticeably changed and not just the addition of CG scenes and CG clean-ups like Jabba, but the entire picture quality seemed a whole lot better.

Tantive IV, Princess Leia's ship in the opening space battle, is now more detailed than ever and sports bright red stripes that were supposedly there before. I never saw them.

Good job, Lucas. :)

I just watched the films. I have to say I was a little miffed when I saw Hayden Christensen, at the end of "Jedi," instead of David Prowse but, it's cool. It's the same character and I've got the other versions on tape, anyway.

I don't have a PC so, I can't watch the DVD-Rom features but, I saw the rest of the DVD. THe documentary was really good. There were some fascinating tid-bits I didn't know.

All the featurettes were good, too.

The sneak peak at episode III was pretty good.

The movies, themselves, looked and sounded great. I'm glad I bought the set.

If he doesn't get your money through the DVDs, he'll get your money through some other way. I am dead serious - you'll probably go see a movie with ILM special effects or something. He has a hand in everything.

And what exactly about the enhanced Classic Trilogy makes it "crappy"?

I love Star Wars. But he didn't just go back and add laser effects and sound effects, he added that whole stupid scene with Jabba the Hutt in a New Hope, and Digitally replaced Sebastian Shaw's ghost with Harden Christianson's in Return of the Jedi!
He freakin' changed/replaced/added/deleted scenes from the movies!
I'm a bigger Star Wars fan than George Lucas is.

The worst aspect of that scene I can think of is that it ruins the pace of the movie - otherwise I quite liked it; Lucas liked it; and considering Jabba is mentioned throughout the trilogy up until his appearance in ROTJ, it ties the whole deal up quite nicely.

I listened to the audio commentary and Lucas defends his replacing Shaw with Hayden by saying that Anakin died young when he went to the Dark Side and joining the Force allowed him to keep his younger identity. I still think this is crap not because he went out and replaced Shaw - it shows effort, which I admire - but because Luke brought him back to the light side of the Force right before he died.

I agree, if you know anything about ROTS then you know this is crap. A master jedi has the ability to continue on when facing death if he meditates prior to death. The way its done in ROTS shows there is no way this could happen.

I wonder what would have happened if in the end Lukes father didn't die. If he would have joined the Alliance. I assume Leah and Hans would have married. So what would have become of our dear Luke? Would there still be an Empire to fight?

Unbreakable Lex
12-28-2004, 12:57 PM
The story wouldnt be complete. Anakin's purpose in the Universe was to bring balance to the force. He wiped out the sith lord and the jedi. The balance was even. Anakin had more force then Luke and Leia.

However, It is a bit hypocritical of them to say that Anikan brought balance when he produced two Jedi. Guess there is still a sith lord out there.

I havent gotten the new dvds, but I do I have the special editions videos. I kinda like them better I'm not partical to Hayden being in ROTJ. It just doesnt sit well with me.

In the Star Wars books Han and Leia do get married, and have three children. Twins Jacen and Jaina, and Anakin. Luke becomes Jedi Master of the new Jedi Order which is great, and also gets married to another jedi Mara Jade. They have a son named Ben :). What I like about the books is that in the beginning they go into the Leia and Anakin's relationship. When she is pregnant w/ Anakin she visited by her father in a very touching scene. At times I love the books more lol.

The only change I really enjoyed (aside from basic sFX cleanup) was in Empire where they replaced the Emperor for consistency purposes. Of course, I don't like that they gave him different lines or that, despite being the same actor, he doesn't sound or look like the Emperor from ROTJ, but whatever.

To me, all the other changes just ring bells in my head when I'm watching it... and that bothers me.

I still remember seeing the original movie the day it came out. There was a huge write-up in Newsweek about this film 'changing the face of movies forever'.Some friends and I stood in a looong line and managed to get the last few tickets available-we sat in the 1st row-off to the far side of the theater-and at the time this was 1 of the biggest theaters in the country-so u can imagine the view we had lol.I still think the 1st is the best-followed by 'Empire'-a close 2nd -and Return-3rd-actualy-except for the begainning and the ending i didnt think it was THAT good! But i still liked it better then'Phantom' or 'Attack'.Maybe its unfair to compare them to the 1st 2.Anyhow-I would hope that GL does do at least 1 more-a sequel to Jedi-with Mark-Harrison & Carrie-now that would be cool.

I would love to know what happens after Jedi. It was a good ending with the ghost of Yoda, Ben and Anakin but I want to know if Han and Leia get married. What happens to Luke. What happens to the Empire. There is so much more to tell. Are there books about this?

Summers
01-10-2005, 09:58 PM
yea, there is a whole series that is still going. They bascially start where Jedi left, and they are about 20 years after Jedi w/ a new threat to the galaxy.

btw, I read in my newspaper enterinament section that nearly all the actors from the original to the prequels will appear on a magazine together. I cant remember if it was Variety, or what magazine is it. Let's say from Han Solo to Natalie Portman will appear on the cover.

Hopefully Episode III will make up for the travesty that was The Phantom Menace, and the moderate dissapointment that was Attack of the Clones. It has the potential to be right up there with The Empire Strikes Back--which many people, including myself, consider the best of the SW films.

I didn't mind these last two.... I basically saw them just for the storyline so I would know what the heck happened in the begining. Absolutely fascinating article. It's a good couple pages (both sides). GL mentioned that this is a pg-13 rated movie (the others were only pg) because there are a lot of deaths and limbs getting cut off in the fights. It's not your average happy go lucky Star Wars like we know from the Trilogy.

Here's a song by "Weird" Al it's a parody of American Pie

The saga begins

A long, long time ago
In a galaxy far away
Naboo was under an attack
And I thought me and qui-gon jinn
Could talk the federation into
Maybe cutting them a little slack
But their response, it didn’t thrill us
They locked the doors and tried to kill us
We escaped from that gas
Then met jar jar and boss nass
We took a bongo from the scene
And we went to theed to see the queen
We all wound up on tatooine
That’s where we found this boy...

Oh my my this here anakin guy
May be vader someday later - now he’s just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin’ soon I’m gonna be a jedi
Soon I’m gonna be a jedi

Did you know this junkyard slave
Isn’t even old enough to shave
And he can use the force, they say
Ahh, do you see him hitting on the queen
Though he’s just nine and she’s fourteen
Yah, he’s probably gonna marry her someday
Well, I knew he built c-3po
And I’ve heard how fast his pod can go
And we were broke, it’s true
So we made a wager or two
He was a prepubescent flyin’ ace
And the minute jabba started off that race
Well, I knew who would win first place
Oh yes, it was our boy

We started singin’ ...
My my this here anakin guy
May be vader someday later - now he’s just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin’ soon I’m gonna be a jedi
Soon I’m gonna be a jedi

Now we finally got to coruscant
The jedi council we knew would want
To see how good the boy could be
So we took him there and we told the tale
How his midi-chlorians were off the scale
And he might fulfill that prophecy
Oh, the council was impressed, of course
Could he bring balance to the force?
They interview the kid
Oh, training they forbid
Because yoda sensed in him much fear
And qui-gon said now listen here
Just stick it in your pointy ear
I still will teach this boy

He was singin’ ...
My my this here anakin guy
May be vader someday later - now he’s just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin’ soon I’m gonna be a jedi
Soon I’m gonna be a jedi

We caught a ride back to naboo
’cause queen amidala wanted to
I frankly would’ve liked to stay
We all fought in that epic war
And it wasn’t long at all before
Little hotshot flew his plane and saved the day
And in the end some gunguns died
Some ships blew up and some pilots fried
A lot of folks were croakin’
The battle droids were broken
And the jedi I admire most
Met up with darth maul and now he’s toast
Well, I’m still here and he’s a ghost
I guess I’ll train this boy

And I was singin’ ...
My my this here anakin guy
May be vader someday later - now he’s just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin’ soon I’m gonna be a jedi
Soon I’m gonna be a jedi

We were singin’ ...
My my this here anakin guy
May be vader someday later - now he’s just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin’ soon I’m gonna be a jedi

There was another SNL where Carrie Fisher was guest host and they had a princess Leia in a 60s beach party movie skit.I remember Al Franken making fun of her name "princess Lay-a"and when she asked him what all the kids were doing there at the beach he says something like "We're all high school students on summer break-we dont drink, smoke or have sex-we just dance and surf"lol.Anyone who remembers 'Beach Blanket Bingo'
and those films would find it very funny. They even ended the skit with a song about Obi-Won-Kenobi.

I have no idea where this can be found, I don't know it's title and I only saw the second half of it, but there is a very good indie short film about George Lucas' days in college. He is struggling to write a great epic but suffers from extreme writing block, while all around him the characters and situations of Star Wars in human form of course walk in and out of his life. It's very clever. Any one else see this, and perhaps have more detailed info than I.

The Jedi Masters that in the Jedi Council. The leaders of the Jedi, and decison makers made up of Mace Windu, Yoda, Yaddel, Ki-adi Mundi, etc. The ones that sit in the circle at the Jedi Temple and "test" Young Anakin in TPM, and give out assignments.

The OLD FOLKS HOME is in reference to them, since most of them are older Jedi's Vs. the ones out in the field.

Hope that makes sense :p

Luke's childhood would be fairly boring, IMO.

Leia's wouldnt be a bad idea.

Its kinda of cool that leia takes after Padme and Luke almost takes after Anakan to a tea!

The princess and the farm boy, or slave boy, take your pick.

Just basic Epic formula.

Isn't that just the best site.

Kinda ruins any element of surprise but it really does give me something to look forward to.

I'm really excited and that french up in one of the first pictures basically says this film ain't for kids, parents, be warned!

This movie without a doubt is going to be better than the first two, however; I really wished Lucas would alter the part of Padme for continuity reasons.

My most favorite scenes are {sorry if this sounds random}

1. When that A wing hit the huge Imperial battleship and caused it to go down.

2. At the end of Attack of the Clones, when they showed the massive size of the Republic army.

3. When Princess Amidale was pretending to be hand maid, I kinda thought she looked pretty in that organce outfit.

I like Queen Amidala. She's definitely my most favorite character from the prequals. Even like her better than Anakin.

Unbreakable Lex

My favorite scenes have to be:

Anakin fullfilling his destiny and finally bringing balance to the force by killing Palpatine

Darth Vador telling Luke that he is his father

Luke saving the day against Jabba the Hut. :D

From the new series, probably the rebulic army setting off at the end of Attack of the Clones.

Luke saving the day against Jabba the Hut.
One of my favorites also. He gives R2 a solute... goes to the edge of the platform... jumps and turns to catch the platform with his hand... springs up with a flip and stretches out his arm to catch the light-saber from R2.

Another favorite scene is with Yoda. When Luke goes down into the whole and faces what he thinks is Vader. He strikes the image down and then sees his own face in the Vader helmet.

And at Jaba's hut....the first time we see Luke wearing the Jedi cloak.

ooh, I love those :). Luke looked awesome in the whole entire Jabba scenes with the black jedi outfit..yummy. He was so cool. I love when him and Leia swinged across of Jabba's barge it looked like a parallel to A New Hope in the Death Star.

I have so many :(, okay couple of mine off the top of my head(that havent been mentioned yet):
-Luke in his X-Wing shooting the Death Star away
-The Battle of Hoth
-Han and Leia arguing and flirting each other trying to get the Falcon working again lol.....and they finally kiss :D.
-Yoda a smallest of creature uses the Force to carry up Luke's X-Wing.
-Luke vs. Darth in ROTJ when you see him slowly giving into the force

from the prequels
-The fight between Obi and Qin vs. Darth Maul
-at the end of Clones we see the stormtroopers which looked like a parallel with Hitler

But anyway, my favorite uniforms from the Star Wars serious are of the Rebel troops on the transport ship of the very first made Star Wars.

Lucas actually used Hitler's rise to power in Germany as a parallel to Palptine's rise to power. The Republic and Germany were on hard times, and both(Palptine and Hitler) used it to their advantage to rise to power. Either by scapegoating, or finding loopholes. In fact, Hitler's men were sometimes called Stormtroopers. In Attack of the Clones the only thing I found interesting was the historical parallel Lucas was doing with Palptine's character.

Just looking at the stormtroopers marched looked just like Hitler's stormtroopers in the early 1940s.

The whole governmental issue with Star Wars is interesting. I went to the main SW site and checked out their data bank. I know understand everything about the Trade Federation, the attack on Naboo, Queen Amidala's role, Count Dooku and his Separatists movement which resulted in the Clone Wars taking place and how it ended up giving more power to Palpatine.

Of course most of Palpatines rise to power happens in Episode III. Should be interesting to watch and see how he evolves into the Emperor.

Palpatine's power came the moment he squeezed his way on to Princess Amidala's congressional seat and then getting Jar Jar into the Senate.

Summers

I'm going with once he made the congressional seat because then he had easier contact with the Trade Federation. Since he basically set up the Federation attack on Naboo. Wasnt he a hologram projector or something? I havent seen EP1 in a while.

Unbreakable Lex

He was always a senator.

But he got Jar Jar to vote no confidence and give him full control.

So getting the senate job in the first place was his first step.

He had to get in the Republic somehow. My opinion.

Ah... I have educated myself and can answer your question.

It was actually Darth Sidius who tricked the Neimoidians into making a blockade on Naboo. He's also the one in the hologram.

Palpatine only became powerful during the time of the Clone Wars. By that time his term was up the Separatists were forming their droid army so Palpatine was reinstated in order to help fight by okaying the go ahead to build a republic army.... the Clones which in fact were already being created secretly by a former Jedi.

Once the Clone Wars started all power was given to Palpatine by the Senate and public hoping that he would defeat the Separatists. He then started using this power to write up new amendments to their constitution which in return gave him even more power. Nobody questioned his ability since the Republic was winning the Clone Wars...... except the Jedi's. Once the Senate started noticing that the Jedi's wouldn't follow Palpatines order they started having misgivings about making him the leader. Of course by now Palpatine was enjoying his role as a ruler and wanted to keep his status... thus he demolished the Jedi's.

Unbreakable Lex

honestly, the first moment I saw Sidious it had to be Palpatine because of the way they set up the government in the SW universe. Plus it all just made sense. Plus the name Sidious allows Palpatine to hide from curious Jedi.

That was the point to Jar Jar. Palpatine/Sidious needed someone of very weak mind to be able to declare "no confidence". So in short, we can blame Jar Jar for more then annoyance.

Have a curious question.

Only certain people can be Jedi's and it takes a lot of training to be one with the Force.

What about the Siths? How did Palpy aquire the ability to shoot electricity from his hands??

Unbreakable Lex
03-01-2005, 11:30 AM
I think there isn't much difference between Sith and Jedi other then what they do with the force.

To be either, you have to be one with the force, it must be strong in you. Anikan just so happened to be the strongest ever with the force.

There has to be two Sith's. Sidious had Maul, Dooku (i don't think is technically a Sith Lord, perhaps Grevious) and then Vador. Maul was killed so he used Dooku to lure the best thing and probably easiest to convince, Anakin.

But in short, Sith and Jedi are the same in a way, one with the dark side, the other with the bright side. Since there are always two sith's they tend to be more powerful then the average Jedi.

Take in account Sidious and Vador (most powerful Jedi).

Summers
03-01-2005, 11:30 AM
they have high metacolorines in their blood that enable them to have the Force. Remember in EP 1 we see Qin take blood from little Anakin to see his metacolorine count, and Ani's was off the scale. It has to do what's in your blood. Palpy has a lot of it.

lol, I guess I took the biological route to answer that question lol.
