View Full Version : Season 1 Top Ten

Now, onto the first season of what may arguably be the best TV adaptation of the Superman mythos!!! What are your favorite Top Ten episodes of this legendary introduction to a new version of Clark Kent? You may add detailed descriptions as to why you've chosen each episode if you'd like to, or simply list your choices.

1 - Tempest - There was no question about this one for me. This was a thrill ride of an episode from beginning to end, with the Remy Zero guest appearance, the awesome music, CHLARK at the Spring Formal, Clark kissing Chloe in front of Lana (YES!), the tornados, Whitney's departure, the ship and Roger Nixon, and more! This was the best we'd seen of Smallville up to that point, in my humble opinion!
2 - Pilot - I admit that I didn't watch the beginning of Smallville when it first came on the air. My parents had seen a few episodes, and really caught on to the series when "Stray" aired, so I had to go back and watch reruns after the season ended to catch up, and I was not disappointed when I got to watch this episode. The meteor shower was an incredibly well-done sequence that would draw in any new viewer. Every actor and actress was so innocent and fresh-faced and brought great new spins on the characters they were portraying. Allison Mack and John Glover were welcome additions as the new Chloe Sullivan and Lionel Luthor. Finally, Tom Welling, Kristin Kreuk, and Michael Rosenbaum proved why they deserved to be chosen as the new Clark Kent, Lana Lang, and Michael Rosenbaum.
3 - Stray - This episode is the reason I started watching Smallville, and I'm glad I chose to start watching here, because Ryan James was such a likable character, and seeing how protective Clark was of him and how willing he was to try to save him gave me a good grasp of his heroic character. Plus, in retrospect, this episode also gave hints as to the Chlarky goodness to come later in the season.
4 - Hug - Another underrated episode, this one... It was the first time we'd gotten to see a truly likable, "nice guy" FOTW in Kyle Tippet, another guy who I wish they'd brought back on in a future episode. It also featured the first on-screen Chlark kiss, and you've gotta love that. ;)
5 - Leech - Eric Summers steals Clark's powers through kryptonite and a lightning strike, and gets dubbed as "Super-Boy" in the Smallville Ledger! But it turns out he's not so super after all, as the story progresses. Shawn Ashmore did such a good job in showing how a human might react if they gained Clark's powers but none of his responsibility and virtuous character traits. I guess that's why they decided to bring him back for "Asylum!" Plus, Victoria Hardwick got kicked to the curb (finally!).
6 - Crush - Adam Brody did a great job as Justin Gaines, the telekinetic love interest for Chloe (about time somebody was interested in her!) in this episode. It featured wonderful Chlark angst and romantic tension, and led things well into the last couple of episodes. The funeral scene at the end for Whitney's father was so sad, but it as a poignant ending to a very good episode.
7 - Obscura - Not many people liked this episode -- I guess the concept was just a little too "out there" for them to appreciate its virtues, including a pretty likable Lana, the beauty of the growing Chlarky loooooove that was just around the corner, and a suspenseful plot that involved Lana gaining temporary powers (not Clark's, thank goodness) and a bad guy that wasn't a FOTW.
8 - Rogue - FINALLY we got to enjoy an episode that wasn't FOTW-oriented, and it really paid off. Sam Phelan's discovery of Clark's secret led to a darker, tenser episode than the fat-sucking vampire or heat-stealing Popsicle-maker of previous episodes, to be sure.
9 - Jitters - This episode is memorable for several reasons. First, it brought back John Glover as Lionel Luthor, and showed how much (or little) he cared for his son in dramatic contrast to the Kents' love for Clark. Earl Jenkins' quest to expose the truth behind Lionel's dirty dealings led to one of the first ongoing plot lines -- Level 3, the precursor to 33.1. It was way cool.
10 - Zero - Undoubtedly one of the darkest episodes of Season 1, this gave us our first really deep look into Lex's thought process and his turbulent earlier years. The plot kept you guessing, especially with the way they set up the sequence of events and showed bits and pieces of what had really happened at Club Zero. It probably also planted the first real seeds of doubt in Clark's mind as to who his supposed "best friend" of that time really was, and what he was capable of.

A great start to a great series!

2. Rogue - Love the bad guy, love Clark stopping the bus, love Lex's suspicion. Love it all!
3. Leech - I love heroic Clark without his powers
4. Hug - Kyle was a great FOTW. Very Clexy episode.
5. Jitters - I get such a kick out of this episode, and the over-the-top performance of Tony Todd.
6. Tempest - Great finale. Very sweet Chlark stuff.
7. Stray - I love Clark taking on the big brother role.
8. Crush - Great FOTW, touching Chloe story, and that beautiful funeral at the end.
9. Nicodemus - One of SV's first mind whammy eps. Lots of good character moments and performances.
10. X-Ray - Tina Greer was really out there as a FOTW. I love her performance. And I love Clark getting his X-Ray vision.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I recently watched every Season 6 and Season 7 episode, and now I'm going back and starting over with Season 1. Smallville's first few seasons had some of the best moments. :D

This is a really great idea, SGuthrie!

Ah, young Clark, when he didn't have quite such a burden to bear. These are in no order except for the first:

1) "Pilot"--As a Superman fan, seeing the classic elements of little Kal-El's arrival on Earth unfold in their entirety made me recognize again just how much I love the story. The pilot was just riveting in that capacity, and not only that, we got to see Clark's first rescues and meeting with ihs arch nemesis. My favorite scene though, has to be when Clark superspeeds through the cornfield to try and catch the bus, and he is standing there as the wind is whipping back his hair, with that Supermanly look on his face is what cemented my love of Smallville.

2) "Hourglass"--Though it was a bit dark at times, it gave Clark as well as Lex a glimpse at their respective futures. I liked the contrast between the two--with Cassandra telling (and showing in a vision) Clark about how he is different from everyone, but also the countless lives he'll save and then Lex, standing in a blood shower surrounded by bones. Also, this was one of the best endings I've ever seen on SV.

3) "X-Ray"--I had to pick this one, Clark develops his x-ray vision! It had a lot of fun elements (gym class scene), and it was cool how we were kept guessing for a bit about the many faces of Tina Greer. It seemed so X-Files to me, which I loved. I did like the plot regarding Lana and her Mom's graduation speech, it was a nice element.

4) "Leech"--Shawn Ashmore=win. The scenes that stood out to me were the power transfers between Clark/Eric at the beginning and end, as well as the day Eric comes to school newly empowered, with the song "Bonecracker" by Shocore playing.

5) "Rogue"--I liked the plot for this episode...with Clark having to protect his secret without it involving relationship drama. Clark also dodges his first bullet, and there's of course the incredible stopping-the-bus scene.

6) "Jitters"--What I enjoyed especially about this episode was first seeing Clark being a normal teenager--with the "parents are away, having a party" factor, and then trying to clean up ahead of time even though they were already home and saw the mess. Then, in turn, Clark's in superhero mode and saves the day in a huge way at LuthorCorp.

7) "Stray"--I absolutely loved the chacater of Ryan, and his dynamic with Clark. Clark could be himself around Ryan. The end scene was my favorite, with "Superman" by Five For Fighting playing in the background.

8) "Obscura"--This is my favorite episode involving Clark and Chloe for this season...I still love the scene where Clark rescues Chloe and then when he asks her to the dance. He is so boyishly cute, and there's no angst or drama between them here. Another good part is Lex finding the spaceship key.

9) "Reaper"--This one sticks out for me because of the father/son plots regarding Clark/Jonathan, Lex/Lionel and especially Whitney/his Dad.

10) "Tempest"--Clark getting out of the blown up truck, ripping his shirt off and all smokey/dirty. 'Nuff said. Sorry I had to have ONE girly moment.

Great idea for a thread, SGuthrie27! What with Episode Wars going on I've been watching a fair bit of S1. It's great to revel in a bit of nostalgia after the soul-searching in the aftermath of S8. :)

1. Tempest: Possibly my favourite finale purely because I still remember how I felt as Clark leapt into the tornado and we were just left with the sound of the wind howling. A truly amazing cliff-hanger (at that time I wasn't aware of the "no flight" policy and I assumed this would be where Clark learnt to fly).
2. Pilot: A fantastic start to the series. I love the red "capes" on Clark and Lex as they recover from the bridge crash. It bound them together from the very start and symbolised their inextricably linked destinies. I also like to think that it suggested the man Lex could have been - a superman in his own right (something that the writers return to in Lexmas).
3. Rogue: A brilliant story with real tension. The first glimpses of Lex's obsession with Clark. I also love JS's performance: Phaelon, and the threat he represents, really gets under Jonathon's skin and it's played to perfection in that scene in the Beanery. Plus I love JK's line in prison: "You always have a choice, son."
4. Hourglass: Those visions were phenomenal, especially Lex's - and it kills her! This was all part of the excellent way they developed Lex's character.
5. Zero: A great Lex-centric episode. I love the opening with the Faithless tune being played.
6. Nicodemus: As BadToad says, the first mind-whammy episode. Loved it!
7. Leech: Always love it when Clark has to cope without his powers.
8. Jitters: Level 3! I loved that storyline right through to its evolution into 33.1.
9. X-Ray: A great new power episode, and again I loved the teaser with an excellent choice of music (Alien Ant Farm).
10. Stray: Ryan was a great character and I enjoyed his wariness of Lex.

Season One is my second favorite season after S3. Definitely an extremely underrated season IMO.

My Top 10 list :

1) Rogue - Definitely the most underrated episode of the whole show and it is on my top 5 list. Great FX (bus crash/bullet vision), great mythos/forshadowing (S breast plate), awesome non FOTW villain, good interaction with Clark/Kents, and a very cool cliffhanger ending.

2) Leech - Outstanding episode. Love it to pieces. Clark was really like Superman in this episode. He was willing to risk his life for the greater good of stopping Eric. I also really love the line "I'd stop people like you". Best line of the series IMO.

3) Pilot - The episode that started it all. Really fantastic start to the series. I am still pissed off they cut out my favorite Clark scene though. It is in my avitar of Clark speeding up in the corn. It was only used in one trailer for the Pilot, and an alternate take is at the end of the S1 creds.

4) Tempest - Outstanding finale. Everything from the opening scene with Lionel firing everyone (hilarious scene) to the tornado cliffhanger is fantastic.

5) X-Ray - Great power episode. The intro of X-Ray vision was handled very well. Great scene with Clark seeing into the lockeroom and Tina Greer was awesome.

6) Hourglass - Really love this episode. Cassandra is probably my favorite FOTW. The Lex vision was extremely well done, and the episode had some good action in it too.

7) Stray - I really enjoy this episode. Ryan made for a great character. Very emotional episode and great music through out too. I also liked the dialogue a lot in this. Lex has a great line "A strange visitor from another planet that saves the world" when he is asked about why he likes Warrior Angel, and at the end with "Darkness is a journey, not a lightswitch". The funny thing is that I did not like the follow up episode "Ryan" in S2 nearly as much. Stray was much better IMO.

8) Hug - One of the best Clex centric episodes of the series. Awesome dialogue and a really likeable FOTW is Kyle Tippet.

9) Hothead -An underrated episode IMO. I like the fact that we get to see Clark attempting to be normal. Dan Lauria was FANTASTIC as the evil coach Walt, and this episode had a lot of good music in it. The end Clana scream is one of the few Clana scenes I actually like too. Not to mention the sword fight between Lex and Lionel.

10) Nicodemus - I like this one for pure entertainment value. It was fun to see Lana, Pete, and Johnathan all out of character. Plus, it didn't hurt that KK's body-double has an amazing ass.. :D

Thanks so much for the encouragement and kudos, Wicked_Jenn and Lex_Dance! I really appreciate it, and I've enjoyed seeing everyone else's thoughts on the best parts of each season. Thank you to all the people who have participated in the discussion! I am currently gaining a deeper respect for Season 1, as I have been re-watching every episode in it from the beginning rather than just going back to my favorites like I used to. There are some great moments that I had forgotten about, especially those in "Rogue," which really is a pretty strong, stellar episode, and it was a welcome break from the kryptonite-powered villains we'd seen up to that point. I also agree that Kyle Tippet is a likable FOTW -- I always wish he'd come back and give Clark his two cents about how far he's come in his heroic journey, as well as to find out where Kyle himself has been. I'm up to Episode 11 in the series right now, anyway, so I think I'll go down and watch "Hug" while eating lunch. :)

I've recently begun watching Season 1 again on DVD. I'd like to get watch all seasons before Summer is over. I've watched up to episode 5.

The Pilot is great, I'd disliked 'Bug Boy', Hothead was well done; it was one of the first episodes that had any real emotional depth behind it. It brought up issues that would again see the light of day three years later. I didn't enjoy' Tina Geer's' first foray in the Smallville universe. 'Cool' had good effects and it was nice to see Chole get a storyline.

When the show first came out I was frankly bored by the FOW's stories, but now I see that they had their purpose as they were the foundation for a great deal of Clark's actions this pervious season, without them he wouldn't be who he is on the show today.

Exactly. They almost seemed like training exercises for Clark that helped open him up to an understanding of the extents and limits (which were few) of his abilities, and how to fight various super-powered foes and take advantage of their weaknesses.

It's really hard to rate some of these because ask me anyday my answer will be different for alot of them(basically they very close in rankings)

Loved - these definantly stand above the rest

1. Pilot
2. Rogue

Liked Alot - these could be rated 3-10 depending the day of the week, also fun to rewatch these on occasion

X-Ray
Hourglass
Jitters
Hug
Leech
Zero
Nicodemus
Tempest

Better then Aveage - just a step below the above 8 although on any given day one of these could creep into my top 10

Cool
Kinetic
Stray

Neutral - have there subtle charms

Metamorphisis
Hothead
Craving - I know alot of people hate this episode but it fun in a cheesy way

Don't really care for - not Power bad by a country mile, but you won't really find these on my random rewatch list.......

Shimmer - .......although I might make an exception for the Victoria bathtub scene...lol
Reaper - not so great FOTW, just a bland story overall
Drone - most likely of the bunch for me to rewatch, but a slight step below Neutrals
Crush - probably lamest FOTW of S1, and not so bad it entertaining lame like Craving or Redux
Obscura - Lana with vision into somebody else's head was the most ridiculous plot idea all season, even worse then deer eating girl(which I pointed out above had it's subtle charms), most likely choice for worst episode of the Season, although Crush and Reaper up there

I loved the season in general. I thought it was really strong up until Stray, the final few episodes tappered off a bit though(as seen by my don't care list where 4 of the last 5 episodes make that list) but it had one of the stronger Season Finals to even stuff out.

1. Rogue - one of the best of entire series. So much suspense when you first watch and never loses its magic. Cant get enough of it. Always an episode I go back to watching in Season 1. Brilliantly acted especially the part how the cop gets under Jonathan Kent's skin in the beanery. Sam Phealen showing Jonathan Kent's worst fears, someone who's willing to exploit or even expose Clark's powers but ofcourse the sub-plot to all of it reveals the obsession and nosy-approach Lex has with Clark and the kents in some cases. Apart from the moment when he pursued to know some insight about Clark in Hourglass, in this episode Lex tried again in a direct fashion, felt rejected by Clark to help him in this very dangerous period in his life. Did yall notice the hurt in Lex's eyes. It's these sort of awkward moments between them that pushes Lex to take extreme measures to find out the truth like following Clark in his car to the museum. You may want to look at Lex wanting to help out Clark with Phalean but ofcourse Luthors are known for their ulterior motives, such was Lex getting annoyed with Clark's rejection, he tried desperately to get some truth about Clark as Phalean was dying. To add insults to wounds he was told to "go to hell." Obviously, Clark is afraid to reveal anything even to his friends that may suggest suspicion about his secret. Lex noticed Clark was hiding something, he put 2 and 2 together, why would a MPD cop be interested in a "Kansas Farmboy"..? Clark superspeeding away watched on surveillence cam by Lex. Whilst not totally revealing, it left a major cliffhanger and yet what did we get out of it? I suppose Lex just simply suspected Clark super-sped away without any real hard evidence. Fascinating to watch.

2. Tempest - great season finale! Nixon - being the second Sam Phalean wanting to exploit and yet expose Clark's secret. Again, Jonathan Kent at his absolute desperate best to protect his family. Then ofcourse you got Lex threatened to be exposed in his investigation into the Kent family and the meteors, anger at losing the key intimidated and followed by Lionel nagging at him, wanting to start a destiny free from his father. The look in Lex's eyes as Lionel was trapped was truelly memorable, chilling and yet brilliantly acted! It was also fascinating to see Lex battling/struggling to keep his friendship and loyalty to the Kent fam whilst wanting to know the truth about his close friend, meteors and the damning evidence Nixon had.

3. Nicodemus - funny episode in the way, unpredictable. The best exposure to this toxin was Jonathan Kent. He let everything go, especially how he dissed Lex. Lex lying about Dr Hamilton and what he knew without revealing it to Clark even at the end.

4. Hug - the scene with Lex with a gun shooting at Clark, maybe showing Lex's true feelings or not but that revealed a lot about his dark character or rather what he may become. "You can learn a lot from someone you hate!" Love that line.

5. Hourglass - Lex's dark future revealed before he could even know it, classic scene! Did Cassandra really die because of it?

6. Zero - Lex centric episode, unpredictable, an insight into the troubled lifestyle in the past. Blameless he may seem at times but it shows that everything he touches turns out bad for everyone else even those close to him.

7. Leech - the scene where Lex questions Clark about the day on the bridge. An obsession he cannot avoid, believing that Clark is hiding something only to have it thrown back in his face. The bit when Clark in utter disgust walks off leaving Lex somewhat hurt, eyes watery adamant that Clark is hiding secrets and is not trusting him because he is a 'Luthor.' It still haunts Lex even until his final appearance on the show.

8. Pilot - The scene on the bridge when Clark and Lex meet, the first meteor shower, Jonathan Kent's showing his hatred towards the Luthors, warning his son about them and somewhat over judgemental approach towards Lex. A great start to the show.

9. Jitters - love hostage episodes on this show.

10. Stray - Ryan, a kid who can read minds, enough said! Dont yall wish that sometimes? lol Interesting to know at the end when Ryan tells Clark to "be careful of Lex, there's alot of darkness he keeps from the world."
