So what do you think happened to Martha that Clark asked her on the phone, "Can they even do that to a senator?"

It's hard to boot out a sitting senator.

Was shocked to hear a Martha reference. I'm sure Clark was as well.

"Mom?! Oh, my God. You're alive!"

She got...fired?

For harboring an alien, maybe...

^^ Well, I guess that's why Clark was so surprised...

I'm just so happy they mentioned her....if they didn't during this episode I would have been pissed.

I think they were basically 'temporarily relieving her of her duties' sort of thing.

I love it how the first time that we hear about Martha in a long time, it's about her having job troubles because of something that Clark did. Great job PS3.

Yeah, it's been way too long that they even acknowledged Clark still has his mom. Why didn't he tell Lois that Pete was the first one he told his secret to?

I was just thrilled that actually acknowledged Martha in an episode. I wish they had done it under better circumstances.

Clark's exact words were, "Mom what do you mean, "forced leave"? Can they even do that to a senator? Okay, look, this will all blow over, people just need time to adjust. Alright, I'll talk to you later."

And I'm glad Martha got a mention too, especially since Clark outing himself like he did should have had consequences for her too, and it was good continuity mentioning that. Bravo writers for remembering!

I too was very happy that martha got mentioned and clark was talking to her on the phone. It would be been icing on the cake if they could have had annette record a few lines to have been inserted but i know that was asking for to much.

Yeah they were. It makes sense. You harbored an alien for 20 years, you could be an "enemy of the state"....

Yeah, it's been way too long that they even acknowledged Clark still has his mom. Why didn't he tell Lois that Pete was the first one he told his secret to?

Because Lois has never met Pete before. She might have heard about him from Chloe, but telling her he knew would serve no purpose.

I think it was great to have them finally showing Clark talking with his mother. They could have been doing that all along. It only takes a few seconds to mention her name.

do u realize that this is who they are referring to when they say a long running vet of the show will be killed off? it's so evident that Martha will be killed in the season finale. quote me on it.

I was honestly kind of peeved at Clark for not consulting her about it first. I mean, it's OBVIOUSLY going to have a huge effect on her, he should have at least asked her opinion before dramatically changing the rest of her life.

I know, I know, AOT doesn't want to come back so they couldn't do that. Still, it wasn't his most considerate moment.

A reference is better than nothing though.

Did anyone notice Clark's phone call with his mom right after he revealed himself to the world? Did you notice what he said about her being forced to take a leave from her position in DC? I wonder if that figured into Clark's reason to go back in time. What do you think?

chlo-el

Yeah, it added on to it. It showed none of his loved ones were safe.

What if Clark reverse time not because of the safety of his friends to fix. But because he didn't want to have to face his mother's wrath when she got home?

I think mentioning Martha on the phone was one of the best moments of the episode. It showed the fallout of Clark's secret would not only affect him but everyone that was connected with him. I'm thinking they would try to discredit Martha or try to bring charges against her. After all, if the police were after him to run tests/experiments they would want a senator getting in the way.

Martha should at least come back for one final episode but NOT TO BE KILLED OFF!!! i am superman serious about that. In no way should she have to die for clark to become a hero. God this show is gonna be called "Stay-away-from-Clark-unless-you-wanna-die-ville." That would only be the working title for now:p

I have to agree. It was a very brief and completely one-sided conversation but for all that, a very important scene. Bravo to Caroline Dries for writing it and recognizing that Martha may have been forgotten but she is not yet dead and is just as important a figure, if not more, in Clark's life than any friend or love interest.

I'm hoping that the writers are reminding us that she still exists, and might be making an appearance in the near future.
They kind of did that with Lana in "Abyss" when Jimmy mentioned her and Chloe couldn't remember.... granted Lana was only gone for like half a season...
