Has anyone else read this book? I picked it up last week and just burned through it. I was fascinated by the picture they painted of Krypton and of Jor-El and especially Lara (who seems to get short-shafted in the comics and movies and other media).

Also, that has to be one of the best and most interesting takes on Zod I have ever seen.

It was a great, fast read and a fascinating history of Kal-El's home planet.

I thought it was great. Other people might not feel that way but I really enjoyed it and like I said it was a fast read.

Have you ever read any of Kevin Anderson's other books? I've read some of his Star Wars stuff and liked it so that was also a plus in getting me to pick this one up.

I didn't think it was. It built up the story sure but we jumped into it pretty quickly and then it continues at breakneck speed. The last few chapters I just devoured!

I saw this on a bookshelf on Waterstones but I'm not so much interested in Krypton's early days as i am in the adventures of Superman himself.

I'm glad you like the book, Jan and thanks for the love on the avi (which was made by van_duran on LJ). As you can see I've got a new one up now (I change avis like some people change their socks! Which is to say--often! LOL).

And Supermania, I, too, was more interested in Superman than Jor-El and Lara's past but picked it up anyway and am so glad I did! It's a great book, IMO.

you're right. when i eventually did get around to reading it, i finished it really quickly. i really enjoyed this telling of krypton. it kind of made me forget that superman is the person i'm really interested in, because i was so caught up in how awesome jor-el was - and they portray him negatively on SV. i definitely enjoyed zod and i plan on reading it again and again. great read!

I'm glad you liked it. Yeah, Jor-el often comes across as cold, unfeeling or just has very little personality in both the comics and the show/movies. In the book he's more the absent-minded professor/genius type who Lara coaxes out of his shell.

And his interactions with Zod are terrific!

yeah, for sure. i really liked lara in this too - we often don't hear anything about her at all. so this was nice, i could totally imagine her being an artist too - not a astronaut or librarian.

Yes, most of the focus on Clark's parentage has been on Jor-El, so it's always nice when you learn more about Lara.

And I like the dichotimy of Lara being an artist while Jor-El is a scientist. The old 'opposites attract' thing.
