Sort of like "Supernatural" and I don't think SV needs to go there but that trend started in the second half of season five, with their more "mature" themes. Excess violence isn't mature, it's totally unnecessary. The numbers seem to bare that out as the show appears to half lost alot it's viewers.
Maybe it was just the triangles and angst. Ummm. In this political season, I vote too D... dark.

^The darker trend also worked for Batman so they want it to work for Superman even for the reboot movie.

I like the darker note, it makes the whole Superman quest more real because the world is violent and dark out there, so that shows Superman is fighting real issues, and well when you are dealing with Doomsday it has to be dark, if not it would look corny. If Doomsday killing Superman isn't dark...then I don't know what is. I think Smallville is doing a good job

IMO, "Instinct" and "Committed" were pretty light (in terms of Smallville), so I think this was really the first "dark" episode of the season. As long as they balance the light and the dark, I think I'm going to like this.

Well as long as it doesn't as it doesn't get as dark as Descent, that episode strained my eyes.

Oh you weren't talking about lighting?

The darker the better in terms of villian setup and execution.

I very much enjoy it.

Dark is good. Dark is necessary.
No way can you introduce, by the show's writers, the concept of 'Doomsday',
and not have some dark footsteps leading up to the confrontation.

In the early interviews for this season, AM said this season would be dark and this episode set the tone well.

Doomsday's story is not walk in the park.I guess they are hoping we are not missing Lex too much that way :)

personally i like the darker feel, it gives it a more realistic atmosphere, and much more interesting storyline. If you want children rated programs, go watch superman cartoons. many series use vulger language, blood and gore, it's what makes many of those series feel realistic and not so scripted and boring.

Do you honestly think there would be no blood shed when doomsday starts terrorizing the earth...realistically, he'd be decapitating victims with ease with every blow, i just go with idea that most villains only use little force on humans in order not to serously hurt them..but with doomsday it's all about destruction.

If movie makers wanna make a comic book hero realistc, you need to treat it as if it were real, the darker feel makes it feel much more in relation to reality, taken into consideration the special fx, ect. Its like batman with michael keaton, and then batman begins with christian bale, though i liked both, batman begins was much more in touch with reality and felt much more realistic...i say smallville is going in the right direction, at the same time make situations feel realistic, and this has to be done if your dealing doomsday killings, ect.

I'm guessing the darkness comes from wanting a contrast. They need to show a dark Metropolis that needs a (light) hero - Superman, aka Clark Kent.

I also felt more of a Supernatural twinge- in that it felt more real. Occasionally the dialogue in SV seems a bit Jr - highish or unrealistic, but this episode kept everything pretty tight. Davis and Clark's confrontation and every scene with Chloe and Davis- the dialog was right on.
