Fan Art Challenge Round #146:Spooky Shows, Creeps & Treats

Intro:
Boo! It was a dark and stormy night suddenly out of the darkness came a graphics challenge all about spooky television shows and creepy TV characters.
Under the full moon, all of the ghastly ghosts, amoral aliens, mutated monsters, demented demons and the unholy undead came from their horrible haunts to be a part of this challenge. (How's that for cheesy alliteration?)

That means for this challenge you can use as subjects television shows that are spooky, scary or strange. There are three categories available to inspire you so be sure to read below before you get started.


Spooky Shows, Creeps & Treats Themes

Theme #1: Spooky Shows



This one is simple, any television series from any time, that has an overall spooky, dark or paranormal theme is the subject. Shows about vampires, alien invasions, or ghosts for instance. Here are a few examples:
The X-Files, Supernatural, Fringe, Sanctuary, Forever Knight, Moonlight, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Medium, Ghost Whisperer, The Munsters, Dead Zone, Invasion, Dark Shadows, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Charmed and Blood Ties.
Any other, US, UK and Canadian shows that have similar themes are allowed as well.

Please note that shows about crime, suspense or serial killers (Criminal Minds, Dexter, CSI), while scary aren't spooky or paranormal and don't qualify for this challenge. There must be a supernatural "fantasy" element to the shows.

Theme #2: Creepy Characters


For this theme you can create graphics featuring your favorite creepy TV characters. This means if the overall television show isn't "spooky" you can create something using a single character (or more) who qualify. For example, Heroes isn't a "spooky" show in general but the character Sylar is (at least from my POV). And Smallville is a show about young Superman but there have been characters and episodes with creepy plots. For a Smallville graphic, you could use season four's episode "Spell" which had Lana, Chloe and Lois as witches, or "Thirst" in which Lana Lang was transformed into a vampire.

Theme #3: Treats & Tricks

For this category you can make something Halloween themed. You can use screen caps of your your favorite show's Halloween episode where characters are shown in costume or participating in Halloween activities and then make a Halloween themed graphic. Allowed shows - any TV series of your choice, drama, comedy, sci-fi etc as long as the theme of your graphic is a Halloween episode.
Any graphics that have Halloween related text on it also fits in this theme.
#3 b (A different option for this theme.) If you want a more difficult challenge you can use "tricks" to create a spooky photo-manip using a photo of your favorite TV stars or characters as a "stock" or base photo and then creating a spooky or "dark" themed photo manipulation for your artwork.
A photo manip in this case can be digital special-effects "make up" on the person or just an appropriate background in which you place your subject (a moonlit forest or spooky graveyard for example).

Rules

Image Choice:

Please use one show per graphic unless you are using pics from when the show had a cross-over episode or if you are doing a piece for theme #3.
For themes #1-2 you may use any screen caps, episode promotional stills, character promo pictures that are from your chosen TV series or episode. For catagories #1-2 please use one show per graphic unless you are doing a cross over piece. No out-of-character or actor photos for these two themes please.

Special rules for theme #3 only
For part #3 only you may use any "out of character" magazine scans, photo shoots of your favorite actors and actress. Also, you may also use other images from any magazines, TV shows or movies only you are creating a full photo-manipulation for theme #3 b. You may mix shows, movies or fashion magazine pictures to create your manip. If using a stock picture of a model from DeviantArt please follow the models' terms of use.

Please don't use tabloid paparazzi pics for this challenge.

All graphics and manips must be original for this challenge. Pre-made resources such as textures, brushes etc are always allowed.

Entries:
You may post as many graphics as you wish to post on the challenge thread, just remember only one or maybe two will be put in the final poll for people to vote on. (See "Awarding.")

Dimensions/Sizes:

Any of the following small, medium, and large wallpaper sizes (in pixel size/desktop resolutions)

1. 640x490
2. 800x600
3.1024x768
4. 1125x864
5. 1280x960 - new max size!

Suggestion: Try to keep your entries' file sizes under 1 MB so people can view them easily even on slower web connections.

Dates: October 19-November 17 2008 - No Extensions
The final poll should be posted by November 18.

Awards:
At the end of the challenge FotW or her helper will post a poll. The poll can include up to ten items. The poll will include only two entries per person (if space allows) or FotW will chose one entry per person to be voted on. The poll will determine first and second place (and if there are enough entries third place & one or two mod's choice awards will be given).

In addition, all participants will receive a commemorative graphic for participating in the challenge - this round the participation graphic will be made by (to be determined).

Optional but fun: You also may write a sentence or two, or three about what you created and and the idea behind it.

#2. You may post credits for resources (brushes, textures but do not directly link to other fan sites as per K-Site rules).

#3. As always our rule for all challenges applies - all images entered must abide by KryptonSite's forum rules for posting in the K-Site Forums.

This includes the "thumbnail" rule. All posted images must be under 200x200 pixels for fast and easy page loading.** This means we will need to post clickable thumbnails instead of full images. A smaller version and links to the full size version are also recommended. If you need help with creating thumbnails, ask me. Photobucket, Pictiger and Image Shack create thumbnails automatically so I recommend those hosts.

**The new board settings will resize your images to the correct dimensions if you do not wish to do it.

The entries are superb! :D

Lex's Lover: I love the Moonlight entry especially with the awesome blending in the first one. I like how you centered the whole thing around the flame there and you used the different candle stock to add more to the piece. The blood splatters and the moon at the top fit perfectly. I love the second piece for Sylar, it looks fantastic. I really like what you did with the different squares and how they each have a character getting their head sliced open by Sylar. The closeup of his face on the left is perfect too, he looks so devious in that shot which is perfect for the theme. The way you did the text is great with the uppercase/lowercase thing.

Ginx: The Smallville entry is amazing! I really love how you used the paper textures around the whole thing and how it all looks burned up like Isobel's spellbook. The tiny text all around the wall fits so well and I love how you did the blending too. I love how you did the text in the second wall. And the theme for it is perfect and goes so well with the theme for the challenge especially the Dracula image and the close-up of his eyes. The text fits so well with Dean and Sam's facial expressions.

TW1977: Awesome Dean wallpaper! I love how you used the paper stock as the background and how it also blends in with some of the images of Dean. Your coloring is also great because the pink and blues make the scene seem even better IMO. I love the center image that you used and the font you used for the text. I'm glad that you entered. It's always so much fun when there's lots and lots of entries (like the last wallie challenge).

I think I missed your second entry, but I love it too. The coloring is really nicely done with the green and I also really like the caps of Dracula and Dean you used. The green coloring just suits the whole feel of the wall to me. The font you used for the first quote fits perfectly too IMO.

Superb new walls, Stevie! I love the textures that you used especially on the right side in "Haunted". The coloring is also really nice, it really fits with the whole haunted theme. I also like how flawlessly you did the blending, I love how the piece flows and the text you used.

The "Trick or Tina" wall is also incredible. I love how well the manip of Tina Fey (I think it's a manip) looks. The divided light in the middle also adds a very nice touch to the whole wall. Awesome use of the vector shapes.

Before man built cities and hearded their cattle, there were the old ones, ancient, powerful, godlike beings who existed on Earth but in another dimension. There power was too great for them to exist in the realm that we do however they could still walk our realm and in the old days they did, through a vessel and blood sacrifices. 10000 years ago however, they took leave of our realm and slept a deep sleep, but now they awaken again, under the light of the full moon, ready to reshape the world into their own, through their new vessel, Lana Lang.

Now that's scary and amazing all in one! The manip came out great Ry! I do like Lana without red eyes...lol...but this is perfect for the theme you chose! The coloring, text, images, blending, all fantastic! One of your best imo. Is this "Old Ones" from a book, or something you wrote? Very scary! Love it!

Wow, so quick. Thank you Deb :) Red eyes? None of them had red eyes... except the eye shadow in the manip that isn't scary if that's what you mean. My best? Aww thanks :) I'm glad you think it's scary, i made Halloween manips before but never with the intention of actually being scary.

The "Old Ones" are not from anything specifically, I just made it up but this whole piece was inspired by the theme of "Cosmic Horror" with HP Lovecraft in mind, partly the Cthulu myth with the all powerful aliens and the cult that used to worship them as gods and such. I never read anything by HP Lovecraft, mostly cause i heard he was really racist but I've seen art that was inspired by his stories and i really love them... I don't think i can ever get my stuff to be as detailed and creepy but it was the main inspiration for the piece.

:eek: I love your entry, Ry!!! The manip was done perfectly and I love Lana's facial expression on it. Then the dark makeup and her white eyes look soooo awesome in the actual wallie too. I love what you did with the background especially with the text in the other language on the sides. I also really love how you did the main text in the piece too. Making the main part glow green is awesome and your font choice fit soooo well. The story that you set also really fits with Lana's character in your wall too, I love how well it connects and how it looks like a scene from when it actually happened (even though it didn't). :D

Thank you :) I actually didn't play around too much with the colouring on this, well its less adjustment layers than usual anyway... The text was a real pain so thanks. Mortal Combat? heh, i haven't heard that in a long time, i never thought of it that way but yeah, i guess it does :) Even if i didn't intend for it to be. The initial plan was supposed to be darker, and with tentacles and more skulls and bones but, the colouring cool as it is so i didn't want to mess with it and i couldn't find the right tentacles. I'm glade you still think it's creepy though :)

Thanks :) I used a s3 promo shot for Lana's face. As for the text in other langauge, i use goggle image to look for stuff. The background as i mentioned are caps from the movie Mirrormask... great movie, and really great for art too, I keep using caps from that movie for my fantasy themed walls, works great. The font I used is "Underworld" and the green glow, is actually me being too lazy to cut the hair in detail, so in the layer there's a lot of white left in Lana's hair... the glow just covers it so nobody notices cause it'd be glaringly obvious on a dark background :p Anyway thanks for the comment James :D

And i will comment on everyone elses' piece tonight, assuming my internet works.

Ooo Nice walls Halley. I think your walls are getting really good lately :D I like both of them, nice colouring, for the Moonlight one, nice title and I love the blue/green tint to Mick's skin... Man i miss that show already :( I love the red splatter/scratch and the candles at the bottom are a great touch. I love how blue Mick's eyes are at the pic in the top middle. The Sylar one is cool too, I love the red eyes, they are so cool. Great text in this one, and i like the way you framed the pics inside, especially great pic choice for the middle pic because of the painting on the floor, really brings something more to the piece I think :) And i love the text at the bottom and the weird caplocking there, it looks really cool in this wall, never seen it used like that before, great job :D

Ok, so the second wall is alright, nice enough, nice colouring and texture and background (though I'm not too fond of the font, nothing against your use of it, I just can't stand the "chiller" font) but the first one, that one is made of awesome! I love that it's so blue but not totally blue, and the text is really great, I love the 3D one that says "That was scary" and Dean's face darkening against the text from the book, that looks really really cool, i love how "your dying" is on Dean's screaming face and the pic of him running there is great. Love the pic of him with his face on the bible there too and his eyes in the pic on the left. Great pic choices. Really love it.

Oooo really cool colouring here. I like the background, especially the white light from the left and the light circles all over the piece, i also love how the pics are layered over each other too, Sam's eyes look both sad and a bit creepy in the pic on the left. Great texture and i like the pic with the church building looking thing near the text as well. Also like what the text says, I like the emotions in this piece though the bright red at the top of Sam's head in the middle pic actually makes me think Sam is turning into a watermelon and gave me a bit of a mood whiplash, but still, very beautiful.

Nice one Stevie :) I love the lighting and background in the piece, I love how it's dark yet everything is still clear. Nice pic of JLH, In like that we can only see half of her face, her eyes are so pretty, I really love the purple/white light next to her face too, particularly the eye that's barely visible there, nice touch, very detailed :) I also really love the shadow of the tree on the bottom right and what looks like the chest part of the skeleton on it.

I choose Tina! Tina Fey is so hot! I never actually saw 30 Rock though... only on SNL before. Aaanyway, this wall is really cute, though I like your previous entry more, I definitely like the use of vectors and the cartoony style against orange background. I like the pic of Tina you used, and how she fits into the wall. It's a much more Happy Halloween than most of the entries in this round which is pretty cool.

You don't like this piece? Really? I love it! Actually, i think everytime I see a new piece by you i think I like your art more :D For this one i think the text is really great, I love the colour of the stroke and it fits so well with the piece. I always like using strokes but have trouble making it feel like it fits :) I like the texture on the wall, especially the scratchy writing thing on there, i love that, especially how it's written over his face, really gives it that "going crazy" feel, the b/w pics at the top do as well as the other pics you've chosen for the piece and the line texture on Davis' face is interesting. I also really like the colouring, and well, the pic of him from the shower with water running down his body isn't bad either ;)

Well you did a good job balancing the coloring then :) Mortal Kombat to me has awesome looks for it's characters so I think your character could def be a villain from a comic or video game :) Def nice work :)

Thanks :) Though, like Teri said, it looks more like Mortal Combat... That happens to me so often, i set out with one theme and it looks like something else. I tried to make a Jewel Stait wall with a "Greek" look, and it ended up more like Tuscany.

And I had made another manip but not into a wall, i probably won't have time since I'll be going to the countryside this weekend and there isn't any internet connection.

Info/Backstory: New Version! I didn't really like the bottom area of the first version, it seemed kind of empty. In the meantime I've fallen in love with this song from the 1980s which I'd Googled when i wanted words for the title. I remembered it but hadn't heard it in a long time. Sadly I also found out the singer Laura Branigan's whose voice was gorgeous, passed away a few years back. Anyhow, I think the song fits the theme of the series very well. Nick was always fighting for self-control of his vampire side!

Before man built cities and hearded their cattle, there were the old ones, ancient, powerful, godlike beings who existed on Earth but in another dimension. There power was too great for them to exist in the realm that we do however they could still walk our realm and in the old days they did, through a vessel and blood sacrifices. 10000 years ago however, they took leave of our realm and slept a deep sleep, but now they awaken again, under the light of the full moon, ready to reshape the world into their own, through their new vessel, Lana Lang.

We don't mind. Should definitely be in the polls :D

And i don't think Clark's an angel... He has his cute moments but I mostly find him self righteous and oblivious. Lookwise though, it really depends on the photo. I just thought it's been a while since I made Clark art and Deb might appreciate a nearly naked Clark manip.
