That was this episode's major geek-out moment. Even I LOVED it, and I really didn't enjoy the movies much at all.

I must have really been off my game tonight. I didn't even make a connection to the 1st Superman when he said "Statisticly, it's the safest way to travel"!!! I look for Superman movie references all the time in every episode, but somehow that went right over my head! That's pretty embarassing for me since I have the 1st Superman movie dialoge memorized..

At the end when Clark tells Lois that the elevator is "statistically speaking, it is the safest.." This was the same line that Superman told the passengers in the plane that he rescued in Superman Returns.

That line was the same line Christopher Reeve told Margot Kidder in the original: Superman the Movie. So it all traces back to Reeve's movie. It was just a little different from the SR & original Superman movie.

That line did not originate in "Superman Returns" but I did catch it, and he delivered it perfectly.

I know SQUEEing is a lady-like thing to do. But I came pretty damn close to doing it when he said this. I covered my mouth and said "ohmygod".

Of all the iconic lines, that one has to be near the top. I never thought we would hear that line on Smallville. And they use the line for an elevator instead of a plane. Genius!

A lottt of people get injured falling down stairs. Especially the elderly and the handicapped.

As someone who fell from a stair, rolled down several steps, hit the rail and then had a two story freefall (I'm not kidding, it really happened to me, I broke an arm and a leg in that fall) I completely agree with Clark. Elevators are much safer than stairs, especially when you are wearing high heels.

Anyway that was such a great nod at the movies that I loved it.

clark did not say that to lois because he cared about her safety, he was just trying to get her in the elevator because she had been avoiding him and he wanted to make her uncomfortable about saying she loved him. he finally got a chance to talk to her about it so hes taking it.

Tom, delivering that classic Movieverse Superman line, was every bit as perfectly Superman as he was perfectly Clark-y when he wore those thick glasses for 2 seconds in Apocalypse/Noir. :)

That line pleased me immensely - especially that it was being appropriately used on Lois (wouldn't have felt quite the same observed to anyone else).

He was just trying to get Lois in the elevator, so it was probalby a joke or something on his part. It fit completely he would say that, since he says it in the future about planes. IMO.
